Player of the week
Chris Wolfenden (Robertinho Select XI)
In the much hyped clash between Viveash and Robertinho Select XI, it was third time lucky for the Robertinho Select XI. The Select XI's chasing of Viveash's total of 261 was rocky. A slow start, two star batsmen out within 4 balls of each other, and an ever-increasing run-rate required. However, Wolfenden the "Tormenter" (having scored 232 runs against Viveash in 3 innings, including this match) lit up Ashby Road with a dazzling century to guide his team to victory. He stepped up when nobody else was willing to and all but secured first spot for his team in Group B. Robertinho Select XI eventually won by 5 wickets with 6 balls to spare.
Team of the week
Bushpigs (Group C)
Bushpigs lit up Airbase Road as they romped to an emphatic win over red hot favourites Whenaupai. The overconfident Whenuapai manager, Nibbs, made a series of tactical blunders which saw his highly fancied, star studded side falter. However, don't let that fool you into thinking the Bushpigs' victory wasn't meticulously planned and flawlessly executed by manager David Kearsley. Strictly speaking it wasn't. But let's move on. For the visitors, captain Allaway opened the innings, smashing his way to a run-a-ball 50, before Thorp (79) and Dhillon (60*) picked up where he left off. Extras also totalled a costly 26 runs. When it came Whenuapai's to bat, tight bowling strangled the likes of Cuss, Willetts and most impressively Joe Livermore to an excruciatingly slow 18 from 57 balls. Despite a heroic innings from superstar Jason Duggan, in which he scored an unbeaten 61 runs from 41 runs (even more impressive that he hit only 5 boundaries), Bushpigs held their nerve to win by 4 runs.
Best effort
Victoria Panthers (Group C)
A team not too unfamiliar with falling at the last hurdle, Mike Wilson's Victoria Panthers travelled to Lancashire's Old Trafford, with a record of zero wins and two losses, much less than they deserved. Having lost the toss, they were sent out to field. They toiled long and hard in the field, with Lancastrians Webster (55), Abdul kadir (91) and Challinor (85) took advantage of the batting friendly pitch. However, all was not in vain for the Panthers. Young gun and *** icon Clark Hook, who bowled with "remarkable" consistency during his 10 over spell, took a much deserved 5/43, a very respectable economy rate considering Lancashire's total of 307. Chasing 308, the Panthers' batsmen went straight to work, with Lancashire bowler Santosh Islam being spanked for 16 off one over. Unfortunately, the run rate required only continued to rise, and despite a 146 run stand between Drummond (58) and Wight (84), the Panthers ultimately fell short of the Lancashire total by 38 runs, however there are encouraging signs for the boys from Victoria.
