I've followed cricket closely since about 97-98 and seen highlights of many games before then, and no game I've seen comes close to the Calcutta test for me.
It just had everything, the buildup to the series was so huge and Australia's performance in the first test had been so dominant, they were on the verge of winning in India for the first time in 30 odd years, they had to really struggle to put together a first innings, after Harbhajans hat-trick they were on the ropes but they regained the momentum with a great rearguard partnership from Waugh n Gillespie and then put India away very well in their first innings. At the close of India's first innings not a man alive would have bet against Australia and what happened thereafter was amazing, I rate Laxman's knock as the best Ive ever witnessed, he batted asthough he were in a trance. And the atmosphere as Australia's second innings wound down and victory grew nearer was amazing. A hat-trick, 1500 odd runs, an unforgetable double century and two other excellent hundreds, momentum changing hands countless times, a side prevailing after following-on and the end of a 2 year winning streak, nobody could have written a better script.
The third match of that series was excellent aswell and would rank in my top 5.
