Sobers, but its close.

The winning percentages are similar, but losing percentage are slightly more pronounced. So its very close.

Ranatunga
Ranatunga had a serious weight problem. - No player could take a captain seriously modelling a physique like that.

Hows about worst captain ever - Shiv Chanderpaul - lack of language skills

Australia had dominated the Mumbai test up until that final innings, India had nothing on Australia during that match, if that pitch wasn't such a shocker Australia would have cruised home.
The same pitch that wasn't a problem when Australia were bowling India out you mean?

Funny that...

Didn't Clarke have like 6/9?

The pitch was a disgrace, but both sides got hurt by it.

The point is that on here it was noticeable how the pitch only became a problem when the Aussies were skittled in the 4th innings - up to that point there were no complaints, even when Clarke took that 6-9...

Well thats was here, as soon as Clark took 6/9 it was pretty clear to me that the pitch at that stage of the match had become very bad.

Yeah, it reminds me of the test when Bangladesh put up 400 runs against Australia in the first innings. At first everyone was talking like it was the flattest pitch in the universe. Then Bangla skittled Australia out...

In Australia's defence, they did complain officially about the state of the pitch before the fourth innings (not that it's the first time you've heard that, marc 8-)).

And I still maintain that they were right. I'm all for turning wickets, but the state of the pitch turned ordinary trundlers into killer bowlers, and subsquently, the match into a lottery. We've seen similar with some wickets more receptive to fast bowling, though in some of those cases an argument of safety could be mounted, also.

(I don't like the flat tracks we seem to often get these days, but they don't reduce the game to sheer luck in the same degree, IMO.)

Anyway, I thought about voting for Ranatunga, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Funny how you waited till the end of the match to moan isn't it?
Aussie wasn't even a member of the forum then.

Obviously it's stupid to say that Australia dominated the match and only lost because of the pitch, but it was a pretty poor sort of wicket and very difficult to bat last on. It was basically a lottery in the end and either team could have easily won what was a very close match. It's certainly no major slight on Ponting's captaincy abilities that Australia lost on that wicket after already winning the series under Gilchrist. It's pretty much irrelevant, IMO.

Nawab of Pataudi looks like Marty Feldman and wins this battle for me, a courageous and significantly important Indian skip.
