Battle of the Test captains

Benaud has a lower winning percentage than Cronje, so Cronje is the better captain. But he was at the forefront and guilty in the most shameful episode in the history of cricket, and it would be disgraceful for him to win anything cricket related.

Surely, even if one concludes the worth of a captain entirely by ratio of wins, the significance of the matches is worth something? As has been said, Benaud never lost a series as captain, which would suggest that even though he lost tests nearly as frequently as Hansie, they obviously included more dead rubbers or series which were later turned around etc. Hansie lost every series he captained against Australia, IIRC.

Regardless, it's Benaud for me. In terms of captaincy skills they were probably quite comparable, but Benaud had the interests of the game and his team at heart, which is definitely worth something in this sort of debate.

The fact that he never lost a series despite taking over when England was the powerhouse of world cricket says a fair bit as well.

close one this, i'll give it to Cronje slightly since i actually say him captain & he was very good, current South African players have great respect for the man.

I guess you have to take the match-fixing rubbish into account, but still, what Hansie accomplished with SA was amazing. He was a great leader.
Surely you would have to completely disregard it??? I can't for the life of me see how Cronje could collect a single vote unless you did. And I'm not sure I see the sense in that, personally, as in my book trashing the game like that man did is way, way worse than the inept but earnest mistakes other captains might make in general.

Maybe this could have been more of a contest if Perm had strictly said to disregard Cronje's disgraceful mockery of our great game, but seeing as it's obviously on the table, I vote Benaud in a heartbeat.

I didn't feel that it was up to me to decide whether or not the match fixing should be taken into account, it should be the decision of the voter if they want to factor it in or not.

Sorry mate, that wasn't intended as a criticism of you. (Actually my comment is stupid anyway, 'cause clearly it is a contest - I should have said a "contest for me".)
