Battle of the Test Bowling

Botham's spell was undoubtedly legendary (like McGrath's earlier on) - but that tail reminds me of the one England are going to send out on Thursday. Malcolm, on the other hand, produced first a spell with similar results to remove Kirsten, Kirsten and Cronje, then the rest. It says something that Rhodes, the fielding allrounder, batted nine - a strong line-up. And Gooch, Atherton and Hick got runs against Donald and a de Villiers in fine form, so the pitch can't have been that bad. And it drew the series.

Malcolm.

Australia lost 6 wickets for 16 runs to lose by 29 runs. They should never have lost that game and would not but for Bothams spell of 5-1. To bowl 14 overs for 11 runs and take a 5fer to win a very close game is incredible.

However my principles generally dictate that a 9fer should always be better than a 5fer, especially if both teams won.

Malcolm for me.

Botham's spell was a remarkable one of course, but a 9-for against a good team on a pitch that wasn't a total minefield is very hard to vote against.

Very tough one. Goughy is right in that 9 wicket shsould be a better feat than taking 5, but then, that hasn't stopped me voting for any 5fers so far! Botham took 5 wickets for 1 run in 28 balls - I voted McGrath on similar principles earlier on, so I'm going to vote Botham here - it was in the Ashes after all :p

Botham

Murali, easily. I remember the Warne one very well, especially since I had $50 on Australia to win that test and it looked like SA were going to draw until Warne did his magic, but it wasn't THAT good a bowling performance.

Murali's was the definition of match-winning. Genius.
