Battle of the Legends

Very interesting, that implies he may not have been as good as his stats would suggest. I only have a very surface knowledge of him, from reading Benaud's books where he mentioned Davidson. He rates him as a good, but not an all time great player. And since I read Benaud more than anyone else, my opinions kind of mirror his on a lot of subjects. However, for a while Benaud did say that on his day he was unplayable.
I think Davidson's reputation suffers a little because he didn't really have pace and fire and wasn't considered an exciting player. He was relentlessly accurate and one of the best Australian swing bowlers, but he wasn't someone who batsmen were afraid of.

Wasim here, anyway.

Wasim - to paraphrase Geoff Armstrong, Hall's record against the best opposition of his era is not quite what his reputation would suggest, whereas Wasim was one of the greatest.

I actually never noticed that but you're right Matt, Hall's records are greatly inflated by dominant displays vs. Pak and Ind.

He did carry the WI pace attack for a while though. Fair enough he had Sobers pitching in, but I can imagine how many times he would have been chucked the ball in his career during the 50s and 60s.

Anyway Akram for me.

Preliminary Round, Battle 6

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is defined not merely by cricket records but also by aura, impact and legacy.

Hanif Mohammad (opening batsman, played the longest test innings)

Jack Hobbs (opening batsman, most prolific batsman, one of Wisden's five cricketers of the century)

This battle will close after 6 hours (or earlier if it's one-sided IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 12 hours.
