Battle of the Legends

The Wheel is Forever
A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.

I think this process has just become 'vote for the better player.'

The criteria said someone you could look up to, and you have to literally look up to Ambrose but what Flower did in 2003 should at least get him more votes than he has.

It doesn't mean a player can't be a legend based on performance alone, the criteria just states that other things can also be taken into account.

Round of 64, Battle 31

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who made a significant impact on the way the game is played on the field.
- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.
- Remember that a legend is defined not merely by cricket records but also by aura, impact and legacy.

Battle 31

Arjuna Ranatunga (batsman, captained SL to a World Cup victory, memorable incident with Ian Healy, other controversy)

versus

Thomas Lord (cricketer, founded Lord's cricket ground)

This battle will close after 12 hours (or earlier if it's a no contest IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 24 hours.

We shall define a legend of cricket on the basis of the following criteria:

- An influential figure who remained involved in and made significant contributions to the game off the field.
- A hero or an icon who served as an inspiration for others (cricketers as well as the general public) and will be remembered for years to come.

Battle 32

Doug Walters (batsman, several fables and stories ...)

versus

Kapil Dev (all-rounder, captained India to a World Cup, the only player with 4000 runs and 400 wickets in tests)

This battle will close after 12 hours (or earlier if it's a no contest IMO) with a lead of at least 5. Otherwise, it will close after 24 hours.

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
Either way, it's tough to imagine how McGrath would become more legendary than Laker at any point in the near future. I'd like to hear the reasoning of the pro-GM folks.
I would replace near future with just future in your statement. You under rate McGrath where that is concerned. A player can be a legend and enjoy legendary status not just because of some thing like a 19 wicket haul. McGrath had great cricketing ability and cricketing ability can be reason for legendary status as well where I am concerned. Some people laughed that Bradman cannot win this battle or on those lines earlier in the thread but if you ask people who do not follow cricket even regarding one man they would associate with cricket, they would name Bradman. Bradman is easily the biggest legend cricket has seen.

Laker's 19 wickets are legendary. No doubt about that. However, when we consider the bigger legend for the future, McGrath's 563 test wickets, several winning performances, McGrath's brilliance as a fast bowler hold more weight for me.
