They're very hard to compare, obviously. One's really not comparing like-for-like across the best part of a century. I think the most can reasonably expect of any sportsman is that they're the best of their era & all contemporary reports seem to suggest Spofforth was certainly that. If not for his 7 wickets in the 1882 Oval test we probably wouldn't have "The Ashes" either. Garner was probably (in absolute terms) the better seamer, but I think Spofforth matters more in the history of the game.

Well said, I think it was 7 wickets in each innings, so a total of 14 for the match.

A pretty brutal match-up early on.

Spoffoth was probably the first great Australian seamer, and produced some remarkable performances, and was comfortably the greatest of his age.

Garner was part of the most fearsome pace attack ever seen, managed a test average under 21 and was one of the greatest ever death bowlers in ODIs.

Garner takes it for me, marginally.
