Actually one of the leading batsman of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Made his Test debut in 1937 and retired in 1955. :)

Hutton One of the best openers ever, from what I gather. But this is a very close match up and I feel really sorry for Lillee.

Tough one this, cos one's really comparing chalk & cheese. Both world record holders in their day & both of immense value to their respective teams.

I think I'm inclined to go for Lillee tho, because a good case can be made for him being the best Aussie seamer of all-time (Davidson & McGrath fans now spluttering into their tea... :D ), but Sir Leonard would definitely have to bend the knee to Hobbs & Grace (and possibly Hammond, Sutcliffe & Barrington too).
