Battle of the Australians

Macartney - the best Aussie bat of his generation - his average needs to be adjusted to take into account the times. He's mentioned in the same breathe as Trumper and was a young Bradman's inspiration to be a cricketer.

In fairness to Grout, his stats as a keeper should be mentioned here in case people vote without clicking on the link:
51 Tests - 163 cts, 24 stumpings

Story behind that?
The guy's always bagging any new players that come on the scene always saying that they are no match on any guys from his era. He is so arrogant. About the only ex-Australian player I can say that I hate.

International Captain
Wally Grout

According to the following quotes, he could be rated as the best keeper ever (until Marsh and Knott came along)

Sir Donald Bradman: He was one of the finest wicket-keepers of all time.

R. B. Simpson: He was the greatest wicket-keeper I ever saw.

W. W. Hall: He was the finest wicket-keeper I either played with or against in my ten years of big cricket.

Proper cricketer's names these pair: Wally & Charlie. None of yer Bretts, Justins or (shudders) Shanes.

I'll go with Grout myself, poor guy died tragically young & (ironically) showed enormous ticker to play on at the highest level after a heart-attack. A specialist, yes, but a specialist in an age of specialists.
