Battle of the AFL Stars

I find this battle tough, because Lloyd's probably the biggest old-fashioned "sniper" in the game at the moment, who'll only hit anyone when they're at their most vulnerable (have a look at the latest Essendon practice match for one); he's the typical velvet sledgehammer. Also, being a Geelong fan, I've often seen Scarlett have the best of him. However, he's been a very good player over a long time, and his record speaks for itself - pretty much always in a successful team though. I'll be interested to see how he goes this year in a side that will finish in the bottom half of the table, however.

Black's such a star. If you combine Sam Mitchell and Joel Corey, you get Simon Black. You also get a Brownlow and a Norm Smith.

I'll think about it for a bit.

Rate Black incredibly highly.

I should like Lloyd, because he's an old-fashioned full-forward, but I've never seen him do much when in a poor team. He caught a few people's eye in 97 when Essendon were crap, but that was it. Ever since then till 2005 he's been in a very good team with a quality midfield, hence quality delivery. He doesn't take enough contested marks for mine, but he's still a champion player, just untested. He didn't have a good 2005 but Essendon fans put that down to the arm injury he had, he didn't have a 2006 bar a couple of games, and those have been the two years where Essendon have been woeful. As Jack said, we'll see how he goes this year.

Probably has a lot to do with how the game is played these days, but he's very "Lead-mark" and one dimensional in that way. Even someone like Dunstall, whom had that stereotype over his head throughout his career (mainly because he was being compared to Ablett and Lockett as a full-forward much of that time) was a lot more adept in one-on-one situations than Lloyd.

However, as I said, that "sit in the goalsquare and push your opponent out" has probably died with Alistair Lynch, to an extent, as with numbers so heavy in team's 50m lines, you don't get the chance to bomb a ball long to a one-on-one all that often anymore, unless you're the Sydney Swans whom base their game plan on it (mainly through keeping numbers behind centre and running the ball through that area).

Lloyd will probably be remembered in a similar vain to Michael Roach when we look back on his career. I also wonder how much he's benefited from playing at Telstra every second week.

Lloyd - Jack makes some good points, but he remains, besides maybe Lynch, the best key forward of recent times by a fair margin... the last "key" full-forward really...

Tough, going Lloydy because he's probably the last of the old fashioned full forwards. Has his soft moments, but he's been a gun over a long period, longer than most people realise. Pretty sure black will go through, he's a gun in his own right, but post 2000 bias and all...

I've left this open for as long as possible due to the closeness of the vote, but since there has been no votes since 4pm i'm closing it. Black goes through 7-5

Round 1, Battle 12

Jonathon Brown - Brisbane Lions - Centre Half Foward

vs.

Anthony Koutoufides - Carlton Blues - Midfield

Kouta - Has been a champ for a long period of time. Brown has been dominant when he's on the field, he just hasn't been on the field enough though :(

Neither have been on the field that much actually. Brown, even though I think he's a ****...

Kouta's 2000 season was as good as anyone has ever played, but I'm voting for Brown. You gotta remember he held down CHF in 3 premiership sides, before he was even rated alongside Judd as the best in the game. Kouta's been good for a lot longer, but Brown's just too good.
