Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

BoyBrumby

Englishman
Waugh. Maybe it's the strong streak of masochism that comes along with being an English cricket fan, but I've always liked ol' SRW. Seemed aware of the noble tradition he was a part of, which as a cricket nerd I go all moist for, but always maintained a sense of perspective too, with his work in India and the visit to the Gallipoli memorial.

Also loved him because for a very long time in the 90s and early 00s he was the only current Aussie test player who'd actually lost an Ashes series.

Perversely, these are among the reasons I dislike him so much. I know it's wrong and I can't possibly justify it, but it's true.

You dislike him because he's a student of the game and does charity work?
Well not the charity bit tbh - that does actually provide some redemption for him - but the whole student of the game / Gallipoli thing, which by any rational measure should really make me warm to him, in fact has the opposite effect. As I've said, my position is utterly indefensible.

I suspect it's pretty hard for most English fans of my g-generation to warm to him much. Respect, yes, but liking him, very hard indeed. It's to do with him being instrumental in the destruction of my cricketing dreams for a decade or more, and a figurehead of an Aussie team that (largely for the reason I've just given) was very hard to love.
