Baggy Green ball tampering: Bancroft, Smith and the Aussie "Leadership Group"

"Foreign substances " weren't mentioned in the Laws at the time and as you said Burge couldn't even ind evidence that he'd put dirt on the ball, neither could the umpires................
And no where was he specifically fined for ball tampering either, although it may have been possible even under the 1980 wording
No-one shall rub the ball on the ground or use any artificial substance or take any other action to alter the condition of the ball
if Burge could have proven that he had put the dirt on the ball.

Now may I address some facts:
Atherton did not lie to the match referee. What he said was entirely consistent wwith what was found - and their was no evidence of the ball having been doctored.
Please note that being accused of doing something, as Atherton was, did not mean he did it.
He was not fined following that game.
Funny that both the BBC and Wisden say he was.

Burge fined him after the game at The Oval - for 'dissent' (a barely perceptible eyebrow raise).

I can't believe the bowlers weren't in on this, or Lehmann.

Do we really believe this was done without the input of the coach, or of the bowlers? Someone's telling porkies.

This makes Warner look like an enormous tool. Came up with the plan, coerced a youngster to do it and when it was exposed, refused to front up and admit any wrongdoing. Wow. I'm honestly a bit speechless. Despicable worm. I have a bit of sympathy for both Smith and Bancroft. None for this douchepimple.
Bancroft sure, but on a bare reading of the CA press release, I've got no sympathy for Smith. The official story would appear to suggest that Smith knew and either decided to turn a blind eye, or gave Warner a wink-nudge approval to go ahead with it. Either way, I really don't see how that's a whole lot better than actively conspiring in the original plan and given his position as the ****ing team captain he obviously carries an obligation to come down on that **** like a ton of bricks.

The report makes me think less poorly of Smith than I did initially, tbh. He comes across more as just a really awful captain than the pre-meditated cheater I kind of had him pinned as before it came out.

The umpires seem to have escaped any criticism, but isn't it part of their job to keep an eye on the ball?
Apparently there was nothing untoward with the ball when they checked, hence no change of ball and 5 run penalty... so it was either a piss poor job by Bancroft or he had not really got a good opportunity.

I suppose they lied because they thought ''tape with bits of dirt'' sounds more innocuous than sandpaper?

Can we all take a minute to just revel in the fact that one of the most scummy sports leagues and sporting bodies in the world has just banned Warner and Smith.

The same organisation that's letting a side banned for fixing back after a couple of years.

Truly amazing.
Cost/benefit analysis from Indian cricket overall. Neither of them are worth having in the team anymore- their value as players is less than the cost of their controversy. Get the BCCI to ban them, and you don't have to pay them, and don't anger fans of theirs by dropping them. BCCI gets to give the finger to players it has beef with in the process.

I kinda like it too. Nice to see these two being punished for being odious in a way that does not involve a ban from cricket (stupid CA), and IPL isn't cricket.

According to an interview I heard on Cape Talk just now. There is a senior South African player who would sign an affidavit about seeing sandpaper shenanigans in Port Elizabeth game

There was a newspaper article saying that Warner was spotted putting sandpaper in his finger bandages.... it was why Bancroft got given the job for CT. Rather than Warner who normally looks after the ball.

But starting to get into conspiracy theory stuff. Still think Lehmann knew what was going on, and I'm pretty sure Warner (at least) had done it before.
