Australian Test Selection Thread 2017 - 2018

Usman probably feels more pressure to perform than most of the other guys in the side due to the lack of faith he was shown in Asia.

He's down on form at the moment no doubt but he's still hit two fifties this series. He should be retained for South Africa.

Bancroft on the other hand has some clear technical weaknesses which have been exposed at this level. If he doesn't perform in Sydney the selectors would be mad to keep him, particularly since he was largely picked for his performance in two shield games, one of which was on an absolute road.

It's telling that three other batsmen have scored double hundreds in the shield so far this season. Bancroft's performance at the start of the season looks less impressive in that light.

Renshaw did hit a half ton in his last innings for Queensland. If he can score a hundred or two in the tail end of the season he should definitely play over Bancroft in SA. Not that he should have been dropped in the first place.

The selectors have really been cheering Renshaw on to fail. They almost dropped him for India for not scoring in the warm up matches and he scored more runs than anyone not named Smith.

My side for SA:

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith (c)
S Marsh
M Marsh (should be Maxwell but won't be)
Paine (w/k)
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood
Lyon

12th: Bird (one poor performance where nobody was threatening should not be held against him).

I reckon Usman is a certainty for South Africa. Bancroft is already on thin ice and could be replaced and Mitch Marsh - Perth ton notwithstanding - is a big risk to play at 6 in those conditions. So I don't think they would be looking to make any more changes to the batting than they have to and they'll just hope Khawaja regains his poise by then.

Yeah if Renshaw hits some decent form he gets back. Just don't like right handers as openers full stop

Who are the 4 other schmucks who come along as backup in addition to the current 11 (assuming Bancroft hits a ton or something in Sydney)?

Keep S Marsh in the middle order, that is where he has succeeded this series. Surely it has been well and truly proven by now that he is patchy outside off against the new ball, that will be less of a problem in the middle order.

Tough. I rhink the selectors would want 5 backups ideally.

Assuming the current XI all make the tour: Starc and Agar will be there plus most likely Sayers and one of Handscomb and Maxwell. With SMarsh or Khawaja able to open, i havent picked a reserve opener.

I mean, there's a whole history of Holland being randomly called up to OD teams etc. Its just he actually performs in shield cricket now

I'm gonna guess Ussie will be promoted to opener and Handscomb brought back. Personal preference is to bring back Burns, who has been the form opener of the early rounds of the SS.

I'd like to bring back Renshaw and actually give him a run in the side instead of panic dropping him after a couple of shield games.

Does he get back in the team without doing anything to earn it though?

We can argue until the cows come home about whether or not he should have dropped, but the fact remains that since he did he's been terrible in domestic cricket. You can't just pick him again with no justification.

"He shouldn't have dropped in the first place" isn't a good enough reason
