Warner is a different issue in that he looks mentally shot

He’s the sort of guy who could turn it around quickly but I wouldn’t bank on it at Headingley

Trouble is that I don’t have faith in Harris so Khawaja is probably best bet to open

Failure to pick Burns & Patterson coming back to bite them

Yeah, even were TPC fit for Headingly, I'd be binning Bancroft, moving the Pillow to open and batting Labushagne at three.

Yes that's the way I'd go. As much as I hate to even think it I reckon Warner is close for the high jump and Harris opens with Khawaja.

Bottom line is that our openers have combined for 62 runs in 8 innings

Smith or no Smith, something should be done

No way would I even remotely consider tossing both out at once, wholesale change mid series is something that should always be avoided wherever possible. Bancroft definitely on the chopping block for me, but I am unsold Harris would do a tremendous amount better. But assuming Smith is unavailable I would have Harris coming in and Khawaja staying at 3

Warner's form definitely concerning, but I wouldn't drop him from a team already missing Smith, no chance

Remember when Aussie batsmen were almost all great pullers and hookers? What happened to that? These guys can't play a pull shot to save themselves, anything short of a length is just fended limply away

You never know, maybe Bancroft’s Godzilla-step forward followed by a limp presentation of his bat will be more effective at Headingley.

Win or lose after this series does Tim Paine step down?

I don't see him scoring any runs and at 34 you have to offer something more than been a nice bloke .

Australia host Pakistan who are awful next in a few months, that seems a perfect opportunity to get someone like Carey in surely?

T20 has had a negative influence for sure.

Carey really needs to work on his keeping though. To the spinners he is plain awful

Paine's been pretty decent imo. Not like others are banging down the door. HIs keeping has been pretty good, and he's taken over the captaincy and was given a side without its two best batsmen for a year. He's made a few decent contributions down the order too. Winning these Ashes will be a wonderful triumph for just about the most unassuming cricketer you could imagine. Hell of a legacy, whether it's 3-0 or 4-0, it'll be something always looked back upon fondly by Australian supporters.

Just heard Langer's press conference - unfortunate choice of words talking about the concussion protocols and it being a "no brainer" ruling TPC out.

There's no way JL actually coaches the team in an meaningful way. He'd be more of a symbolic, gnome-like mascot
