Australian test selection 2018/19

Yeah, Australia has such an embarrassment of riches in batting, they can afford to leave out players with non-conformist attitudes.
This sort of thing really pisses me off. I just read bits of an interview with Langer and he says something about 'being careful not to reward poor performances but it's not like people are banging the door down' yet you have Maxwell being blacklisted and left out in the UAE after being told he was assured of his spot and Burns scoring way more runs than Handscomb or Marnus, the latter being supposedly now an allrounder despite a bowling shocking average and no batting form to speak of, and Stoinis outscoring Marsh yet being left out for the batting and sending down dross role. Langer has notable duplicity and a big talent for saying a lot of words which don't mean anything, and no other skills whatsoever.

County Division 1 can be pretty weak, especially compared to Test cricket. I'd expect the same Swampy hacks that dominate Shield cricket to dominate there but still be useless in Tests.
Like who exactly? Cartwright at middlesex last season who got sent home halfway through for being so poor whose batting was so bad he was valued more as a 4th seamer ? Bancroft who averaged about 30? Renshaw is the only one who done well but he also done well in tests too

TJB's opinions on county cricket shouldn't be taken too seriously. As it actually turns out mediocre Australian shield batsmen are often mediocre county batsmen and and batsmen from both competitions who average around 35-36 or so are failures at test level.

The only real mystery with county cricket is Jeetan Patel's continued success.

I remember when we had langer at middlesex, now that was a proper overseas batsman. Lehmann was one of the best bats in the county circuit but couldn't get in the test side. Unfortunately for Aus there's probably only 4 or 5 these days who would have a decent average over here. Esp in div 1

Don't forget how Pujara stunk it up for Yorkshire this season

The real value for overseas players in the CC is only partially to do with the standard of cricket. It's a a lot more to do with the professional structure and environment, as well as the discipline being away from home puts into you. The runs you score or don't score there may not necessarily paint an accurate picture of the benefit you derive from a stint.

Sharmer has also been bossing county cricket, but has been pretty mediocre now that he is back for the Warriors. Guess average overseas spinners are County Kryptonite...

Remember the days when players like Law and Thornely were all but abandoned to the County wilderness...

Langer out as national coach, J.Gillespie in.

Selection panel: Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor, Jason Gillespie.

Meanwhile a guy like Renshaw scored 340-odd one month ago in club cricket, has had one shield game and then nothing since, can't even get in the Heat BBL side ahead of plebs like Heazlett. Lehmann is bludging at the Strikers, presumably happy enough to be getting paid while not sacrificing his technique for T20 by batting higher up and facing too many balls. How are they meant to improve as batsmen, let alone push for selection?

The issue is that there's not really enough time between shield games in each half of the season. Batsmen don't have the time to correct technical flaws between matches. We've already had six rounds. That's enough data to know who is in form and scoring runs and taking wickets.

Renshaw is currently out of form and I thin k he's on the verge of a big score but he's had six games without more than a single half century. That should keep him away from the national side.

Burns is on his third season of a 40+ average. He has a decent test record as well and top scored the last innings he played in a test. It's a travesty he's not selected.

It was a joke. "Swampy" hacks, I was making fun of the Marshes. Also I didn't say they dominate county cricket, I said I would expect them to, but still be useless in Tests. Don't be so sensitive.

Jhye Richardson is the quick that should be challenging the 3 in the current test team. Don't think there is a contest for the rest. Looks like Siddle has inside track for his experience in England though which is urrghh.

Even in the smash and grab format Jhye Richardson's genuine quality which can be transferable to the longer format is making it difficult to hit him.

Boggles the mind that Siddle could be considered for yet another England tour - already been on three failed Ashes tours so why not go for the quaddie?

His Test form over the past five years when he's played has been largely mediocre and afaik his Shield from haunt been great. Just no justification for picking him again.

Siddle did have a good season in county cricket over the winter.

The selection process is not "transparent".

The public doesn't know why players are being picked over other players who have done as well if not better.

It's nice that you still keep in close contact with your father like that

If we are going to play Siddle anywhere, then England would be the place to do it. He bowled excellently for Essex, granted on somewhat friendly services but he still outclassed the vast majority of county bowlers
