Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Bear in mind those stats are from 1995. Martyn would've had some Tests in 1992 that won't count towards those figures.

I've gone for 1995 because it represents Australia post Border.

Think it has gotten to the stage now where they're as well just picking Maxwell. There's clearly a fear that he's 'The Big Show' and thus not suited to test cricket, but he's got a solid FC average, is a gun fielder, has a plethora of international experience, and can bowl a bit too.

I'd have picked him at 6 before Ferguson.

I'd only want Maxwell in that lineup if we were so comfortable with our batting that we feel we could deliberately make the no.6 pinch-hit or miss.

He knuckled down last season in the shield and in the 6 games he played he averaged 50,with a highest score 98. He just didn't score the big ton that would have had everyone sitting up and taking notice.

He scored 81 in the shield game last week.

He should be in the mix.

(not at no 3 tho :)')

I'd pick Maxwell (provided his form is acceptable). It's not like he's massively underperformed in the long game, from what I understand he just doesn't get to play much Shield cricket. At least he'd strike a bit of fear into the opposition and, at this point, we haven't got much to lose. If theres's someone (preferably below pensioner age) banging down the door to play ahead of Maxwell, fine. But as far as I know, there isn't.

Pattinson such a great talent. Needs managing but him, Starc, Haze is a great trio to build around as well as Cummins if he ever gets properly fit.
Yeah, just dunno if it will ever actually happen unfortunately.

You hope that at some point 2 or 3 of them will be fit for a prolonged period which will automatically make Australia good again basically. 3 very good bowlers will cover a multitude of sins.

Yeah you can paper over a lot of cracks if you're taking 20 wickets a game. Not 85 all out sized cracks, but still.

Yep especially as every team in the world (aside from maybe Pakistan oddly) seem prone to collapses.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think aside from England, every team has huge problems. And its not like England do not. They just have lesser number of them than the other teams and that is just because of their all rounders. Australia should look at getting Pattinson and Cummins fit, figuring out who their best spinner for test cricket is etc. if the batsmen coming through are roughly at the same level as the guys already selected. Just like how bowlers seem to get better when they have a score to play with, batsmen can become better with the cushion of great bowling too.

How bad is Bailey against seamers? Is it really that bad that he cant be a good selection for an India tour? Think he will kill it as a batsman here, tbh.

I'm a bit upset that Shaun Marsh is out injured. I'm hoping he is just 'out' with the injury not playing a part. I say make him earn his spot all over again, rather than be given an automatic return.

I've never been a fan but I don't think this is the time for us to be anti-Darsh.

Its getting so desperate we'll be hoping Marsh is fit for the Indian tour. I guess I'm hoping he'll translate runs in SL to runs in India but he's the only bat we have outside Smith who you'd have some hope of scoring runs on the pitches we are likely to get over there.

and I ask again, what exactly does Mennie add to the side?

Did they confuse him for The Chadd or something?

It's the usual short term thinking.
He was highest wicket taker in the shield last season, but Sayers has been better this season and has been turning in as good or better numbers for longer, and the same goes with Bird.

The shield just isn't the breeding ground it was. And cricket administrators in australia have to be honest about that, answer for it and reset and rebuild.
