Picking 4 seamers and no spinner is dramatically over-stretching the bowling AFAIC.

18-20 overs a day for each paceman and 10-15 overs for part timers. I'm relying alot on Siddle but think we can pick up the wickets with them on a lively pitch that so that we can get away without Lyon.

Some of our teams futures, short-term and long could easily be impacted by their performances of the team and on an individual level.

I think Siddle, Lyon, Marsh, Voges are on the chopping block although it is unlikely all 4 will be dropped.

For Sid, I just dont think they'll want him playing in the day-night Test, I think Mennie is penciled in to debut there.

**** times huh.

Hopefully that last innings knock from Nevill will silence the tools who think he cant bat.

I'm not one for rash changes mid series, but if Voges fails next test it'd be worth getting Ferguson into the team for the last test with an eye to Pakistan and India.

Although tbh I'd bring him in now at 6 in place of Marsh.

I don't think anyone (in Australia) thinks Nevill "can't bat", just that his performances have been underwhelming

Hopefully for him this is the start of a return to form

I'd have KPat well ahead of MadDog or Head frankly. Much more steady. Has been super consistent since he's been promoted to 3. Not for this series unless disaster strikes, and probably not India, but by next Summer I'd like to see him in or on the cusp.

If we're retaining the top 6 (but for SMarsh) then Nevill and Marsh definitely have to swap in the batting order. Having a steady and technical number 7 after a thrashing #6 with no hint of defensive nous makes no sense whatsoever.

Yeah, indeed. Especially considering Hazlewood bowled a ****load of overs this match, and Starc bowled a lot for a guy coming in underdone. 4 seamers, no spinner and no legitimate fifth option is a recipe for lots and lots of injuries.

The number of Overs bowled by Australian bowlers

Starc 19, 31 total 50
Hazlewood 17,37 total 54
Siddle 12,26 Tot 38
Marsh 6, 26 Tot 32
Lyon 10, 34 Tot 44

Is 54 overs in a test a lot for a frontline bowler ?

Interesting that in the big Saffer 3rd innings Siddle bowled less than the over 3 main bowlers.
Thought he would have bowled most. as the line and length bowler he was picked as, trying to tie up one end.

I'd rather they picked Maxwell in that case tbh.
True; and I did to justify benching Lyon. But the selectors haven't picked him so I'm trying to work the format in Maxwell's absence.

Our fast men bowled a lot of overs in the 2nd innings. But they had to bcos Lyon was ineffective. Besides if they were underdone maybe the workout could be beneficial though I'm not neglecting the worry that they were perhaps overworked.

I think playing Lyon atm is like going in a bowler short as SA have him worked out. So I'm going for short spells for Haze and Starc and longer spells for Marsh and Siddle (or his replacement if unfit). The remainder overs to be shared amongst 4 batsmen who probably wont do any worse than what Lyon did in Perth. Hopefully make up any deficit by strengthening the batting. I'm also punting on a lively deck down there as well.

But they'll probably keep Marsh at six.

Not saying that I'd go this way but if the selectors were being consistent then O'Keefe should play in front of Lyon as he is a better batsman

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, I would have picked Maxwell making Lyon's inclusion or not somewhat irrelevant

Dearest Peter,

I am so sorry for putting your name on the chopping block.

I know it is difficult to read comments of this nature from me and you'll need some time to overcome this, so fair play developing a sore back.

Please take the time out by attending a few more NBL matches and bypass the villages of Hobart, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Then, make every single Australian boy and girls Christmas wish come true by making a heroic return at the MCG on Boxing Day.

Time to move on from Siddle. He's run in all day for many years, but he really isn't a good enough bowler to be risking his back problems flaring up in tests anymore.

It seems odd that Sayers isn't getting a look-in when his record is better than Mennie's. But either way it's time to find some new pace bowlers who can stay fit for a few tests in a row.

We need a batting machine. Then pick your 5 bowlers likely to be chosen and have them bowl 200 overs straight, to the batting machine. If they break down, we have saved wasting a whole pile of effort developing another weak as piss Aussie bowler. If they last, they are probably made of steel and worth playing. Find four of these guys and we can get rid of the 5th bowler/all rounder until a real one comes along. I don't have any great suggestions for selection other than, drop Marsh x2. They have had their chance and are not working. While Dan says why change when there is nothing better, I say change, because they are not better.

After watching Australia play Test cricket for since 1978 (could only get better after WSC depleted side), I am starting to really hate that a genuine batsman is not given the chance at # 6. It was always exciting to see the next generation batsman get a chance at #6, and then work their way up the order once they settled.

Shane Watson was the first player that I considered could actually do it as an all-rounder, but no-one has ever achieved it since Keith Miller...time to go back to 6 batsman, WK, 3 pace and 1 spin.

Smith, Warner and Voges could all bowl part-time anyway and Maxwell would be preferred at #6 now if they were to stay with bits & pieces players...selectors need to go

I'd definitely like to see Callum Ferguson have a run in the side. He's gone from misfiring talent to very consistent Shield bat over the past few years (50+ in FC cricket since the start of 2013/14), and his ODI career shows that the stage doesn't overawe him and points that he can step up. Hopefully his body holds out and he gets a pretty decent crack at Test cricket -- deserves it.
he's an all time great guy as well which is nice.
