I think it's really important to have our most impactful batsmen facing the most balls right up the top of the order

For that reason, I'm open to just taking the best keeper instead of Wade

Our best keeper is not going to be batting any higher than 7, so is just worth taking our best gloveman?

And, by that reasoning, Finch is not a lock

However, I just seeing him coming good in those flat conditions with the small grounds

Anyone think that if conditions are as expected that leaves the door open for Lynn and Short to have more success than previously?

The difference between Australian and English conditions is seriously frustrating. What passes for icing over there is too sickly-sweet here and what is adequate cake here is stale over there. There's the tools for a decent batting lineup but apart from the banned duo none of them are quite good enough (with Finch off the boil) to be a truly excellent option in all conditions.

Yeah in Australia 280+ is still a defensible total. On most English postage stamps at the moment you need an extra 60 runs on top of that.

That's where a cricketer like Symonds was so valuable. Averaging 30 at home but 50 overseas at a run a ball is amazing and helps win world cups.

But yeah all of our batsmen batted too slowly last winter, which is why we got white washed despite having at least one batsman hit a century in nearly every match.

Last 3 years of ODI batting for Australia.

Warner, Smith, Stoinis and S Marsh are the only batsmen to average over 40 in that time. Finch notably has 4 hundreds in that time but averages under 35. Similarly head has a lot of runs but averages low 30s. Wade is statistically ahead of Carey, most notably on strike rate, where Carey is a full 20 runs per hundred balls behind Wade.

The other notable batsmen are Maxwell, who is averaging 25 in this time period but has the highest strike rate of any batsman and Handscomb who is striking at 100 but averaging 30.

The last time we had so many batsmen average so low we at least had Bevan to carry us.

Had a look at the bowling side of things there, Haze averages almost 9 less than Cummins and at a better economy rate too. Interestingly enough Faulkner had a pretty good record with the ball his last little stretch in the ODI team

he was still average with the ball but because his batting wasn't being called upon that much, and it sucked when it did, he was labelled out of form. which just goes to show picking a bowling all-rounder based on batting can lead to some odd stuff

Yes it could easily be argued that Hazlewood has been the best bowler in ODIs for Australia over the last 3 years.

smith was actually pretty awful in ODIs the year before his ban so that kind of shows how good he was before then. idk what happened during that time.

If Finch was to be dropped (he prob wont be, but if) I'd love to see Maxwell open in the WC with Warner.

It'd either work or it wouldn't, but you wouldn't be left wondering.
This was my team a few weeks ago

1 Warner
2 Maxwell, only opened once 51* s/r 145.71
3 S Marsh
4 Smith
5 Stonis
6 M Marsh
7 Wade
8 Coulter-Nile
9 Starc
10 Richardson
11 Zampa

We need one of those big powerful guys who probably hasn't realized their potential in the past, to real stand up and rip open some games - like Symonds did from nowhere in 2003

Finch, Stoinis, MMarsh etc.

Starting to wonder if we should just get really funky because I feel like this will be our most unsettled side ever in a WC. And actually think this could come off.

Darcy Short
David Warner
Shaun Marsh
Steve Smith
Peter Handscomb +
Glenn Maxwell
Marcus Stoinis
Mitch Starc
Pat Cummins *
Adam Zampa
Josh Hazelwood

Squad:

Bancroft +, Richardson, M.Marsh, Lynn

Notes:
Short and Maxwell can provide extra spin, as can Smith. Maxwell and Short can easily take the role of second spinner.
Short clearly the best batsman in the Matador cup. Lynn clearly second best
Bancroft has been excellent in BBL with the bat and provides a decent back up keeper
Handscomb to take gloves permanently, and has been batting well.

Yeah I don't think we can keep carrying Carey when he really doesn't look good enough. If the selectors refuse to pick Wade then giving Handscomb the gloves is really the only other sensible option.

I'm loathe to give Handscomb the gloves full time. He's a part timer and nothing more.

And Wade is the form batsman at domestic level so there's not any point in keeping him out any longer. Carey just isn't a great ODI player.
