you know, the one thing i never really considered re the spinning pitch was the prospect of australia a batting on it

Oh Mitchell, I knew you wouldn't disappoint.

A well compiled single and 9 overs for 55. That's the Mitchell Johnson we remember.

Bit harsh on him after his good figures in the first innings and it is now a spinners pitch.

Could be a good finish if Lions bat positively in the morning and set around 300 to win.

Not being harsh on him just sees him back in the Test team spraying his crap everywhere.

I think he is a fair bit below that now (If I was an Aussie i'd hope so anyway) but still worth keeping an eye on as he is a matchwinner. Also been so long since his last run of first class games he probably needs them.

If he was a fair bit below that he wouldn't be playing. He's there because the selectors are still deluding themselves that he can be rehabilitated and turned into a matchwinner. I've never doubted his ability to win a match. It's just who he's helping to win more often than not that I have a problem with.

NCN and Little Billy were there and could have done with the chance. Even someone like Copes who despite his unsuccessful summer would have been good just to see what he might produce in English conditions would have been a better selection. Johnson is a known quantity. Saying 'but oh now it's a spinner's pitch' when he gets slapped about at 6 an over is the same old Making Excuses for Mitchell song we've heard a thousand times before. We all know the tune by heart. Time to change the record.

right now, Chris Woakes is averaging more with the bat than every Australian bar Burns, a newbie, and Cowan, our current test opener

Mitch is only there because he has a multiple year CA contract

They feel obligated to give him every opportunity because of that

In reality though, I think he's a long way down the Test pecking order

I think he has to be there 'cause he'll be taking about 40-50 wickets in 5 of his games next season, so we need him to play in games like these + the away games he'll play in the shield so the selectors can remember why they have to say "but" following the 15 wicket haul he takes in a game at the waca....

Before I dismount my high horse...

Tim Paine has done nothing to indicate he should bat higher than 7 in First Class cricket.

Reckon Paine can bat 6 when you have Butterworth and Faulkner in your team but it is interesting to see him bat ahead of Burns. BTW why was the match only a 4 dayer when its considered an unofficial Test?
