the 17th name is really interesting. I just don't see who could pinch it from Cowan or Bailey.

Australia A squad to tour England: Ed Cowan (c), Peter Forrest, George Bailey, Jackson Bird, Joe Burns, Tom Cooper, Patrick Cummins, Ben Cutting, Liam Davis, Jon Holland, Mitchell Johnson, Michael Klinger, Nathan Lyon, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc.
Can't see it being anyone else in there. Surely couldn't be Doherty or Beer

It probably says where they hold Haddin in the Test pecking order still. And they've said that they are placing a higher priority on Test cricket, so that of course makes Lee vulnerable. Whether or not you agree with Haddin being the "incumbent" in Test cricket is another matter.

Not really all that fussed if Cummins isn't on the list, they can still pick him whenever they want and time with the state program can't be too harming.
Haddin isn't even the second best keeper in Australia as his NSW teammate Peter Nevill is also better than him.

Cummins should be centrally contracted if only so that CA can manage his workload.

Yeah it is annoying that the Test opening bat can't get a spot in the 17 when an emphasis is being placed on Test matches. I think, unfortunately Johnson will get a contract and perhaps if its not one of Cowan/Forrest/Bailey it might end up being Clint McKay or Xavier Doherty.

Can someone explain this?

This situation is different, not least because Cowan is very likely to play the three Tests required for him to be upgraded to a Cricket Australia contract, and because, despite the steady hand he has brought to the opening role, he is yet to produce the really big innings that cements his place.
So if Cowan does play the 3 Tests, what sort of contract does he now get with CA? Are Tasmania still required to pay him their full portion if he is away playing for Australia?

I'm not quite sure how it goes. I assume he gets a regular CA contract (like he would have this year) when he plays that 3rd test, but Tasmania pay him up until that point, have to give up a contract spot for him and given he'd get the upgraded contract in Nov, they wouldn't really be able to replace him with a player. Seems a bit harsh really, if that's along the lines of how it'll go. It's like "well we know you're gonna be on here anyway, so we'll give a contract to McKay (or w'ever) until the tests start so we can control McKay". If I were Tassie, I'd be a bit pissed

Although if I were Tassie I'd probably kill myself.

So I guess Tassie will be the real big losers from this. I mean, NSW should have been expecting the players they'd have to contract/let go from about Dec last year, and most of the players losing their CA contracts wouldn't be getting one if they were 30 of them in place, but with Tassie it really does seem they're a bit unlucky. Doherty snagging that last one is their only hope. If not, that's Paine/Cowan/Bailey/Doherty/Krejza losing CA contracts/just missing out

Lol. When you say regular CA contract, I wonder if its automatically the minimum 230,000.

Someone like Cowan who will not be on big coin in the Big Bash and will not play any IPL or anything really should be in the 17 if the selectors still believe he is good enough to open the batting in Tests. Oh well, he can make money from his book sales.
