Australian off season domestic 2012/13

Sylvester

State Captain
Who would I pick in the Australia A squad to tour England?

Batsmen: Bailey (c), Cowan, Hughes, Khawaja, Forrest, Maddinson
Keepers: Nevill, Hartley
Spinners: Beer, Holland
Seamers: Cummins, Patterson, Bird, Starc, Cutting, McDermott
Smith for Maddinson and SOK for Holland would be my changes.

Assuming we pick 14 players:

Batsmen: Bailey (C), Hughes, Forrest, Smith, Christian, Usman, Cooper
Keeper: Nevill
Spinner: Beer
Seamers: Cummins, Patterson, Bird, Starc, one of Cutting, McDermott, Faulkner etc

Notes: Doesn't feel right picking Cowan considering he's first choice...Can't really pick Paine, although they might...Hughes shadows as 2nd keeper...Don't see the need for a 2nd spinner if the 2nd spinner is Holland...6 seamers obv too much.

Now, I don't really like the batting group. Hughes, Usman and Cooper should all be a fair way away from playing test cricket again and I dunno know it is an Australia A tour. I'd send Quiney over for Cooper but I don't expect them to. Burns, Lynn and Maddinson all banned from consideration. Like, they should be a "has to have played 2 good seasons" rule for the batsmen. But then I guess Forrest doesn't get in if we do that

I'd rather take Boyce over Holland. It's a bit rich that the current Shield holders would only have 2 players in the fourteen (and if it was Cutting and Forrest, neither player played more than half a season) if we picked your squad Spikey.

I understand that, but let's actually look at it

Key players for QLD last season:

- None of the batting order bar Burns and Forrest were very good (one is in there, the other is very young and has only played one full season so far)
- Hartley (had his worst season for awhile until the final. Ship has passed)
- McDermott (very young, played one full season so far)
- Cutting (as oft mentioned I have doubts over whether he would be useful at international level, nevertheless one of these two will likely be picked)
- Magoffin (pretty old, although if heaps and heaps of our bowlers died and we had to pick one of these three in our next test Magoffin would be it)
- Boyce (I would pick him in front of Holland, but I wouldn't pick two spinners)

And then there's a whole heap of players who played less than 6 games for the season such as Swan, Hopes, Gale, Feldman etc. So who would you pick?

Anyway I came in here to throw up MJ's name as a possible selection for the tour.

I don't mind how Boyce is being handled. How much long form cricket is on the A-tour? If there's plenty, I'd take him. Just let him be with regards to OD cricket at the moment.

I mean, QLD won because their seamer stocks were so so deep and then Hopes and Hartley after disappointing seasons stepped up in the final. They didn't win because their batting was consistently awesome. Even their awesome bowling attack was consistently different

2 three day games against county teams and then 2 four (?) day games against the Lions

IIRC

I'm not particularly in favour of picking kids who are miles away from playing test cricket for Aus A tours. Jackson Bird being a bit more mature and of course having a much better season gets in. Of course, if it's McDermott v Cutting for that 5th spot, I'd pick McD

but if we send MJ over (akin to Siddle and Hilf going to zim) he might not get in.

one thing i forgot to add is that QLD's biggest strength is AUS' biggest strength right now, and their biggest weakness is AUS' biggest weakness. It seems a bit odd but I don't think it's necessarily a bad or surprising thing that QLD might only have 2-3 players on the tour.

Hyperbole much? He didn't take these wickets at grade level. Would you have thought Cummins or Pattinson to be "miles away" from test cricket when they were picked?

i say miles because hilf, siddle, harris, starc, cummins, pattinson are all clearly ahead of him and then you have johnson, bollinger etc and then you have bird, NCN, Cutting etc. He's promising but I don't particularly see him making a test debut any time soon. do you? seems like we'd be better off sending a Bird (;)) or MJ.

Why would you go back to the "proven failure for the last couple of years" that is Mitchell Johnson? Hasn't he had more than enough oppurtunities? Shouldn't the recent success of Pattinson, Cummins (yes, i know it's just one test), Bracewell and most notably Aamer tell us that proven FC experience and wickets are somewhat overvalued?

Aaron Bird? He gets his wickets at over 40!

Its the Australian selectors, and they might want a more experienced head in the fast bowling unit. Plus it comes up at the perfect time for his return.

And he throws it :-P
