Yeah Watson's rise has kind of usurped the role that was originally envisaged for McD when he was picked, I'd say.

So what happens if Watson breaks? I'm certainly not advocating for Ronnie, but I can see opportunities for him to play for Australia if he stays fit and in form.

I don't know that the no.6 spot is settled. If Marsh doesn't back up his debut and Uzi is out of form McDonald could come into contention. Also if his English T20 form is repeated this summer he'll make a strong case for a middle order spot in either of the pyjama teams. And like you said there is always injuries. I was for a long time dismissive of Ronny as a poor man's Dom Thornley, but last season he really stepped up and if he can maintain that then he's a handy player.
Of course McDonald would come into contention, I doubt he would fill the roll though. Especially with Watson, there is really no need for another all-rounder. If Marsh doesn't continue his form or Uzi or whoever eventually ends up filling the #6 role, the selectors would simply opt to select another specialist batsmen one would imagine.

Ronnie's has long been a better all-round cricketer than Thornley, and the batting difference between the two is becoming near negligible. That said, I don't see him ever playing for Australia again, in all honesty. Unless Watson gets injured and they see Haddin batting at 6, the first I hope doesn't happen, and the second should never happen again.
To be honest I don't even see McDonald being selected even if Watson breaks down. I think that, especially if it was only short term, they would choose a specialist bat.

As above. They would choose a specialist bat.

Kumar Sarna joins Northcote, will be keen to see him back playing rep cricket.
BTW Shane Warne likely to join 1 of the Victorian BBL squads.
