Australian Cricket - New TV rights negotiations/deal

Will Seven get Jeff Thomson back to swear on air about leaky commentary boxes?
haha Dean Jones got a gig way back when Channel Seven covered the Australian tour of South Africa in 1997

So did Dennis Cometti who called Test cricket for the ABC back in the 1980s

This deal means way more AB and BJ on our screens (for those who have Foxtel)

He's a great guy BJ, but I don't think he watches a lot of cricket

Channel 10 stuffed up big time by partnering with Ch 9; they couldn't afford to lose the BBL as it's one of the very few major sporting events they have and they're struggling big time as a network overall. Needed the rights far more than Ch 7.

Despite some claims to the otherwise, Foxtel were always going to go big for the cricket rights as their summer sports schedule is very weak without it.

It's sad in some ways that Ch 9 will no longer be associated with cricket but their coverage has been complacent and lazy for a fair while now and hopefully the new TV coverage will offer fresh perspectives and ideas technically and commentary wise.

I'm guessing the sharing of BBL coverage between Ch 7 & Foxtel will mean CA will be able to expand the amount of games played without it taking a longer amount of time.

The downside of having one broadcaster was that you couldn't have matches on at the same time; now you can double up with 2 matches in one night on 7 & Foxtel. I think one of the complaints of the competition recently was that there was too long between games for some sides.

Yep, having lost the EPL rights and with the A-League plateauing, Fox desperately needed Summer content.

Things can't be too happy at Channel 10 now, considering the BBL was about the only thing making them money (hint: stop showing ****)

That's a good point.

Fox with their AFL and NRL channels also have lots of analysis-type programs throughout the week

Hope they replicate that on their cricket channel.

I think anything on the anti-siphoning list only has to be offered to FTA

If FTA channels don't take up the offer, Fox can show it exclusively

Bruce McAvaney commentating on cricket...
That still sounds better than Brian Taylor......

But yeah given what 7 have done with the AFL in recent years, I'm not particularly optimistic about this. Especially if they just hire who used to be on 9.

Despite losing out on the rights

Nine has future deals to cover the Ashes series from England and the ODI World Cup in the UK, both in 2019.

And also the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2020.

I wonder who would do the latter. I guess Nine would probably just take Sky's coverage for the Ashes, but the T20 World Cup is a local production. Guess you'd probably see the ICC cover the commentary there like they did in the 2015 World Cup (IIRC?).

Nine could potentially just on-sell the rights to the T20 to someone else.

Warney now has no platform to push his anti Steve Waugh, John Buchanan, Steve Smith, Scott Muller etc. agendas

It is understood Seven has committed to estimated annual payments of $75 million or $450m over 6 years, with Foxtel stumping up $105m a season or $630m.
