Aussies maybe not as far ahead as everyone thinks

Sorry, my thread should read "had that great streak thanks to PLAYING at home" not "LIVING".

I'm sure you all got the drift anyway.

And deja moo is right - it was the semi final.

What was wrong in my saying that NZ lost to Pakistan in the Semi final and not the final ?
Read the thread again buddy. I am assuming wpdavid is referring to England when he said 'Not half as gutting as losing to them in the final when only the rain had kept them in the competition after the group phase. Still hurts ....' Whereas you quoted him and tried to correct him by saying semi final assuming he was talking about NZ? I cannot speak for wpdavid but i assume he was talking about england

I assumed he was a Kiwi .He doesnt have location details mentioned & was quoting a post Re:Nz . So a misunderstanding one way or the other I assume.

In tests there is still daylight but in ODI's there is little in it. Ever since they lost bevan and warne there has been something missing, shown by us beating them in ICC and nz's recent form.

I was, but it's fair enough that not everyone would know I'm English. No problem.

we did lose games with them in the team though, but yeah I understand what you mean.......The last couple of games have had some strange decisions by Ponting etc as well.

haha you can talk about that all you want but you are no longer the best team in the world
(you never faced nz in the world cup)

We are however beginning to rebuild quite nicely seeing as it's still more than 2 years to the next one.

If not already said, this thread doesn't give enough credit to the strength of the NZ ODI team. NZ should expect to compete well with AUS in ODIs as they have recently thrashed all except SL and AUS.

I think ODIs help cover up NZ's lack of a quality opening partnership in tests, as Fleming and Astle (probably NZ's best two batsmen) cover this hole, while specialists like Marshall and Cairns can cover the middle order.

the only reason the aussies are not as far ahead is because we suffer batting collapses regularly and have done so since the beginning of the aus-nz-sa series a few years ago. Our openers are in great touch and Ponting is in pretty good nick as well but it seems that if they stay in for a while the others come in facing a spinner first off and struggle. Or, the top order collapses and leave Symonds/Lehmann/Clarke to salvage the innings. Our bowling is pretty good I reckon.
the only reason why the aussies arent as far ahead as they should be is because they have selectors stupid enough to drop their best batsman at 34, and not pick him while hes scoring prolifically at the domestic level.

If South Africa beat England in the forthcoming test series, then I feel they should be ranked as world number two.

In that case, they would have drawn with England away and beaten them at home.
They have also drawn with NZ away. They may have lost to all the subcontinental sides away of late but I fancy they would beat them all if they played them at home.

Obviously If England win or if they draw, they will in my view be world no. 2.

In all honesty, I doubt if England will win the series in South Africa -- at best it will be a draw for them.

And the reason they will stay ahead is because the selectors were smart enough to bring in Clarke while they could still hold their own and let him mature in a winning team.

Aussie ODI cricket will work in 4 year cycles, so expect to see some culling at the end of each World cups. Yes Bevan could still be in the team this year but CA is more worried about how to stay on top, not by how much we win the next game.

and of course its quite conceivable that bevan can stay fit till the next world cup too. im afraid you dont drop you're best batsman at 34, especially to replace with someone relatively unproven in the ODI game.
