Assessment of the World Cup

England may have developed the 100, but the sole aim of that is to attract people to the game. It's not like we're going to kick out Test Cricket - we love Tests in England arguably more than anywhere else.

It takes two to tango...I understand your POV.

With other nations that play test cricket in the world right becoming more inclined to play the other formats over test cricket, that's where the slope is slippery, if you catch my drift (pun intended.)

It's T20 and Tests or it's just t20, this bloody tournament has just taken over a month of the calendar out where we couldn't play any Tests. T20 makes money, those tournaments are going to happen, the more of this redundant format, the less Tests as it ain't going to impinge on franchise cricket.

It was fun whilst for awhile, but not any more.

In 30 years time we'll still have all 3 formats. If we can't even kick out the pointless Champions Trophy then clearly the 50 over World Cup is going nowhere.

Yeah CL is still there and will be there till at least 2029 despite no one wanting it since mid 00s.

So it's highly likely that the One Day World Cup will still be there in 20-30 years and beyond, although I expect the format to be 40 overs.

I don't think the format of 1 big group works that well.

As a cricket lover I do like the fact there are so many games to watch but it's doesn't provide enough excitement.

Having only 3 knockout games doesn't sit right with me.

Also there's not enough benefit for topping the table. If you're going to have 1 large group then the top team should go straight into the final.

I'd have 2 groups of 7, and have QFs as the World Cup in any sport needs to have a strong knockout element to it.

I agree :

Tests : only financially viable for a few teams, still an elite select few play it and some not much at all - the big guns won't play more than one-off or 2 Tests against a lot of sides, certainly not the format to 'aspire to' as fans of it might make you think

ODIs : much more globally accessible, and as a comparison of prize money for T20i World Cup and this one will show there is plenty of money in this format, although some of that may have been based on India as hosts ($500k for just being at the Champions Trophy in 2025)

Few sides will become Test sides, if they do it will all end in tiers and no money push cricketers to the more lucrative competitions, so this for many sides is their Test....

T20is : wham, bam, thank you mam, draws the attention of those without much span, too short to be that tactical, and 'evens it up', Is bound to be popular as well as accessible given the duration fits into a much shorter timeframe than ODIs (day) and Tests (up to five)



Purists will cling to the Test format, it has some attraction sometimes but maybe more because it lasts a bit longer and when on top you can really go to town even though in result terms it still only counts 1.... If they weren't so keen for them to last the full $ days where possible they might make it more of a CONTEST, the whole point, between bat and ball. Low scoring Tests for me are the ultimate in that format, many go simplistic and say it just makes it too easy for bowlers but actually if you bowl well you get rewards, bowl badly and you don't, and batsmen have to either dabble and take a chance for quick runs knowing there's a ball with their name on it, or try and grind it out but certainly bowlers have to put it in the right spot or a bad ball is still a bad ball, and late cameos can be deadly

400+ plays 300+ plays 350 plays out to an inevitable win bowling last is pretty dull, too formulaic with not enough variation even though some get over excited by a passage of play or a session or two as if it swings the game

bilaterals are generally boring, only real advantage is more likely to get as big a crowd as possible because one side is the home/host side and if it were say England, South Africa and Pakistan in England then South Africa vs Pakistan might draw less crowd (although frankly I'd be surprised if poorly attended, plenty of people would love to watch any ODI with top sides involved and getting tickets for England isn't all that easy or cheap)

I agree with this. I miss tri-series too. Im not saying they should come back but they definitely meant more. When England won the VB series in 07, it didn’t make up for the Ashes drubbing but it was genuinely a big deal, with no revenge series banter (well tbh I probably did make that joke because I’m a massive tool, but).

Arguably the second best format possible, I'd always want QF in any "world" event but alas. We could always go back to the 2007 format if we want more teams in but just make it double round robin, with each team playing the other 2x in group stages then go to QF/SF & finals. The reason we have this stupidly long group stages is because the broadcaster/ICC wants to maximize revenue on India games! As much as I love India winning it's also true that the oversized market for cricket in India needs to be less important going forward for cricket, this should in theory also encourage other/less competent boards to get their act together & invest more in the grassroots.

Yeah I used to hate on the CT as a kind of irrelevance in the cricketing calendar, but having a world ODI tournament that teams take semi-seriously with selection is a rare treat and we shouldn't get so hipster about it here.

Asia Cup (when it's ODIs) in a similar category imo. Maybe we should have a SENA Cup.

If we say that E stands for Europe rather than England then Netherlands and Scotland - two teams that finished higher than West Indies in the WC Qualifiers - can play in it as well.

If we say that E stands for Europe rather than England then Netherlands and Scotland - two teams that finished higher than West Indies in the WC Qualifiers - can play in it as well.

Plus Ireland who won an ODI series in the Caribbean as part of the qualification league.

2 groups x 6. Either have q/fs or have group winners go through to semi-finals, 2nd in one group plays 3rd in the other.

Revert to using one ball for the entire innings, gives the pacers a chance to get some reverse swing going again late in the innings.

T20: The best players will be playing in franchise tournaments all year round, Perhaps this will have a more World League view. Massive contracts, TV coverage and areas around the world will see the best players. Internationals will only occur for T20 around World Cup years

Traditional: Players deemed not good enough for T20. This will be Domestic Cricket and Test Match cricket. 50 Overs will be played as well but no World Cup due to the Money involved in T20

That would kind of depend on Indian players being allowed to play in other T20 Leagues. They won't, nor do they have any need to.
