How great are those pics of the Nepal-USA game? Great stuff.

Welcome to the boards to the original poster too.

This is exactly what we're referring to in the atmosphere thread of members, especially those that have been around a while being rude towards new members.

How about guiding them by being friendly and they'll get the message of how to contribute to the forum in a positive fashion?

That sort of post is never needed.
I very deliberately did indeed take a less rude tone than I could have done. It turns-out, once again, that it didn't matter in this case because this account was the spammer who's been afflicting these parts of late. But I could easily have said "thanks for wasting everyone's time with a completely pointless post", and didn't - in part because of the fact that there's been objections to it recently.

That, I consider, was a pretty moderate post in reply to a post that, frankly, deserved fair opprobrium - and now we know why, the poster in question was just posting any old thing in order to advertise.

If anyone thinks that's too harsh, then I'm sorry, I think they're over-fussing.

I also agree that it is great to see cricket spreading its roots to the developing countries... countries with a rapidly growing percentage of population with more expendable income. It would be very hard to displace, say baseball or American football as the mainstream attraction in the USA, but countries like Afghanistan, Nepal can potentially be big success stories. I can't wait for a time in the future where we could have maybe 20 Test-playing nations who can all compete at a high-level. It would be wonderful to see.

Just because you don't like the topic doesn't mean it won't come to something. The thread has spawned two pages so far, the Nepal pictures on the first page were amazing, and at the time that you posted, the thread started didn't even have the spam link in his sig. Pull your head in.

Yeah. Loved the pictures. I am so looking forward to Cricket in Nepal, it is an incredibly popular game in the country and it will do wonders to the development of that country.

To me this is what sports is all about and I am so glad that ICC/ACC have taken this initiative to develop cricket .

It's not a case of me not liking a topic. Like it or not, all the opening post did was state the obvious. If you think there's nothing wrong with that, then, well, that's your thoughts - mine, however, are that stating the obvious such style is completely unneccessary. Obviously, if in future you'd prefer me to keep my thoughts to myself, that's a different matter, but the opening post was stating the obvious, that's all there is to it.

It said it in a much less crude way than could have been said. I deliberately tried, before I realised this account was a spammer, to be vaguely "OK then, never mind this being crap, I'll be nice".

It is a shame that some folks continue to spoil this thread just like many others in CC. Who cares who started the thread, if you have problem and/or you suspect that it is a spammer, use the report post feature. It has been mentioned several times.

I for one was seriously looking to hear some interesting information on Cricket in Asia but I guess it is impossible to do so because here we have some custodians of CW who think it is their birth right to drive every thread in the direction of crapness.

Not really, no. If people really want to discuss the generic, broad thing that is "cricket in Asia" they can do so any time, any place, but the opening post of this thread was a banal one. It is being discussed because, clearly, discussion needs to be had on it. That discussion won't stop anyone who wants to have broad, generic conversations regarding Asian cricket - so no, it isn't nor never will be remotely "impossible".

Great read that. 7000 fans for every home game would be an accomplishment

Cricket has spread into Nepal and Afghanistan due to the effect of India and Pakistan respectively. Everybody knows Afghans picked up the game while staying in the refugee camps in Pakistan, while Nepalese require no passport or work permit to work in India. Many Nepalese do work in India and from here they picked the game. Also Indian TV channels also help spread the game in Nepal.

Besides this 2 other nations Bhutan and Maldives due to similar effect have cricket as one of the top games and any competition in future would be washed over.

The effect of South Asians on cricket is there on many other nations
Iran:- People in Baluchistan province of Iran really play cricket as per the common culture with Baluchistan of Pakistan. Over time Cricket is expected to take a hold in the nation
UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia:- A large chunk of population in these nations (In some nation a majority) are from India, Pak, BD and SL. These teams have started to gain strength. With ICC rule allowing 7 players who are residents for 7 years to play in the team without being citizens is directed to tap this huge population. With time these nations have picked up the game and surely have more better future
Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore & Thailand Have a huge population of 4th or 5th generation Indians like West Indies. With Cable TV, IPL cricket has start to come back even with the native because 3 of these nations had cricket being played over a long period due to being British colonies. Cricket will pick up
ChinaNo South Asian effect. It is the government which suddenly has got interest and once Chinese get after anything they usually nail it

So overall Asia has a great future in Cricket. In long term Football and Cricket are sure to leave all games much behind

Steve McCroskey: Jacobs, I want to know absolutely everything that's happened up 'till now.

Jacobs: Well, let's see: First the earth cooled. And, then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died, and they turned into oil. And, then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And, Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it, he took her best summer dress out of the closet, and put it on, and went to town.
And now back on topic... with India being a dominant country in the region, it seems that neighbouring countries are influenced by their culture. Cricket is spreading organically from country to country. Then you have the number of Indian migrants in other far-flung countries such as the USA who are basically propping up the local leagues.

Some see India as a threat to cricket because they are so dominant in financial terms but it must be realised the good that having a country of 1 billion cricket fans does for our game.

There is a chain reaction, which started from India and now South Asians are pivotal in spreading cricket.

British India had Ind, Pak, BD, SL, Burma, Maldives all part of it (SL & Burma were separated later)

India had a team. Then Pakistan separated and they also had a good team.

SL also got independence. They had cricket. Seeing the 2 Big nations of South Asia play cricket, they wanted to Join them. Soon they also got Test Status

Meanwhile BD separated from Pakistan. The Cricket influence was always there. The 96 WC in Sub Continent brought high focus. Then cricket left all sports behind and they also joined the big boys

Afghanistan had a war. Many refugees came to Pakistan. There in camps they saw cricket crazy Pakistani's. Also there was always the effect of Indian Movies. Soon they learn't the game and fell in love with it

Nepal had many people working in India. You don't need a passport to work in India. Also came Cable TV and Indian channels. The game picked up and the sports in No 1 in Nepal

Bhutan is a small country. Secluded from the world but then came Cable TV, and Besides many Bhutanese coming to India and working. They picked up cricket. Now Cricket is the no 1 game played by students and has wide following

Maldives:- Many tourists visit Maldives. Also a strong influence of Ind & SL is the key behind cricket spreading there.

Iran:- The Baluchistan and Sistan province of Iran which borders Pakistan and has Baluch living who also live across the border in Pakistan really love the game. Rest of the Iran is still football crazy. But the game is spreading and over 10 years I expect that strong South Asian effect will spread the game there.

UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia:- All these nations have large populations from Sub Continent who are mad behind cricket. Many of these people have been residents for many years. They form majority in some nations and also form a large chunk of population. If they were allowed to become citizens then we would have never had the issue of non passport holder teams. When they have made these nations their home hence as residents they should and are allowed to play the game.
Most of the members of these are from South Asia

Hong Kong:- Cricket has always been played by British and many South Asians that settled there. There are many cricket clubs and cricket grounds. Cricket is Sustained because of the South Asian who for generations have been living there.

Malaysia, Singapore:- The Indians living for many generations have been playing cricket. South Asians are the people like Hong Kong who are sustaining the game. Now challenge is to take it to the ethnic Chinese and Malays

Myanmar:- Once Myanmar defeated Sri Lankans before independence. The large Indian population which formed the majority in Capital was behind the game. Then Burma shut itself and Indians began to leave. This also led to cricket just vanishing. Now it has started, but with very few Indians it will take a time

Outside Asia:- Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Canada, USA:-Also had the game being rekindled or sustained because of South Asians
