Vijay Merchant's first class average is weird, the rest of his team keeps getting all out before him.

I completely forgot Trumper was a fraud as an opener and a far greater middle order bat, Simpson it is.

Pretty sure Hayden wouldn't average 25 on wet wickets of Trumper's time. My guy averaged 33 in NZ, SA and ENG.
Again all that is impossible to say, you can really only judge players on their performance relative to peers.

Trumper was an okay opener.

He was high quality when he hid down the order for half his career.

Despite the excuses re adverse conditions, it should be remembered that Trumper only averaged 33.0 when opening the batting and 48.8 when batting in the middle order. 5 of his 8 centuries came in the middle order yet some CW members persist with giving him a high rating as an opener. He was an ATG of his era and a legend of the game but, unfortunately, not Australia's greatest opener. In this regard I rate Simpson and Hayden our best two with an honourable mention to Morris who, sadly for him, became known as 'Bedser's Bunny'. I'd also add Ponsford to this poll.
