i think what happened was with 1 run needed and 1 wicket left, the batsmen ran himself out on the second run after completing the first. can this happen in real life? or will the game end after 1 run is scored?

Yes, they've also amended it so that if 1 is needed and the batsmen complete one but the ball goes over the boundary, only 1 is scored.
