A good win for Jamie in our friendly yesterday - I posted what I thought would be a defendable total on an uneven pitch with 264/9, Cash 34, Staveley 62, Bennett 75, Greening 33*. Bardle had impressive figures with 10/2/37/7, but crucially went wicketless in his first spell, and let us get away from the weaker bowlers up to the 40th over. Kealey also bowled tidily for his 2/39. Then Bardle ran through us in his last five, (four in his last over), though bizarrely, at that stage of the innings, it was the extra 20/30 runs he denied us which turned out to be more important than the seven wickets.
So, as I say, we were a bit light on what we'd have liked, but should still have made a better fist of our defence of 264. Bewers's and Edworthy's length barely made it over the long jump record at the Dwarf Olympics, and not even the spinners seemed to be able to stick their spinning fingers in the dyke at first. But with 70 on the board, Bridges M eventually bowled Kerwin around his legs for a stupefying 48, and Lee and Gowshall weren't able to take full advantage of Bent's first serving of 30 juicy pies. Cash, having gone for 31 in his first five, then managed to find some rhythm, conceding just 15 from the second half of his spell - And together with Bridges M - pushed the RRR up beyond 6 for the first time in the innings.
But then the timer went off on Big Cook Bent's and Little Cook Edworthy's oven, and Gowshall and Lee rushed to get the Steak and Kidney's while they were hot! Lee choked on a crust, hitting a return catch to Bent for a grafting 93 (135), and Edworthy ridiculously took three wickets in his penultimate over, as indigestion set in. But justice was duly done when Gowshall and Wanless scrambled the four remaining singles from Bewers in the 48th, Gowshall finishing on an impressive run-a-ball 91*
Bewers had a bad day at the office, but everyone will at some time, what this match illustrated, once again, was that if he and Bridges M don't fire then I'm in deep doodoo - As Cash can only really block up an end, and Bent and Edworthy are cart-horses. With regards to The Battle of Bardle! - I think we pretty much came out honours even, maybe with Bardle edging it slightly. As I say, I think his seven wickets are a bit of a red herring, as they all came too late really. His failure to strike in his first spell allowed us to post 250+, but his awesome second spell did prevent us from getting 280+, which I think would have been a winning score, even with Edworthy and Bent in my side!
