Just saw an article that ECB is trying to arrange 5 match test series with nations like Pakistan to help test cricket grow in nations other than the top 3 (to help Root break Sachin's record tbh but whatever).
Would be interesting to see by just how much he stretches that record.
Depends if he makes it to 2028. That's the year pencilled in for longer series v non-big 3 teams.

Was a longway from Murali though. Had Warne been the top, I frankly can't see Jimmy retiring right there.
retiring at 796 would be insane, but Australians are the true enemies and the fact Warne could've been ursurped in 2 to 3 matches at most and they didn't go for it gives me the vibe that even the coaching staff doesn't care much for records, let alone the wider ECB.

The most runs in test history is a bigger record though. I don't know if it's possible to not care about it.

True, retiring at 796 would’ve been crazy. The ECB seems more focused on the team than chasing records.

Can see the argument somewhat, but still don't think beating Warne would really be the same as being the no 1 Ever. It's like Root beating Ponting's runs (not exactly, but got the gist).

I think if Smith hadn't lost 2 years(ban plus Covid),he would also be the contender for the most runs.
At the time of Smith’s ban…

Smith 64 matches 6199 @ 61.37
Root 66 matches 5752 @ 52.77
Kohli 66 matches 5554 @ 53.40
Williamson 64 matches 5316 @ 51.11

Since then.. almost 7 years now…

Root 86 matches 7220 @ 49.45
Smith 52 matches 4072 @ 50.90
Williamson 41 matches 3960 @ 60.92
Kohli 57 matches 3676 @ 39.52

Amazing how close they were back then in matches.

btw since then Root has played 16 more tests than Stokes (70), and nobody else has cracked 60.

he probably will, he said he'll play the 2027 ODI world cup and there's no real shance he retires from test before ODIs, the world cup is also after the 2027 Ashes and he only seems to get better with age so I reckon we have quite a few years left.

Hope so. Think we have an SL tour just after the 2027 Ashes. Has a good record and skillset there.
