Just saw an article that ECB is trying to arrange 5 match test series with nations like Pakistan to help test cricket grow in nations other than the top 3 (to help Root break Sachin's record tbh but whatever).
Would be interesting to see by just how much he stretches that record.

The most runs in test history is a bigger record though. I don't know if it's possible to not care about it.

I don't know,he may or not but he ruined his chances in 2017 series where the pitches were flat.

True, retiring at 796 would’ve been crazy. The ECB seems more focused on the team than chasing records.

Root says he'll play until 2027 atleast and is a ridiculously superior batter to chef so it's much more likely for him.

Can see the argument somewhat, but still don't think beating Warne would really be the same as being the no 1 Ever. It's like Root beating Ponting's runs (not exactly, but got the gist).

I would say the opposite personally.

I just think a singular event is a bit more likely than a longer term challenge to prevail. Players' batting averages rarely don't drop when they carry on into their mid 30s but English pitches getting flatter gives him a better chance.

he probably will, he said he'll play the 2027 ODI world cup and there's no real shance he retires from test before ODIs, the world cup is also after the 2027 Ashes and he only seems to get better with age so I reckon we have quite a few years left.

Hope so. Think we have an SL tour just after the 2027 Ashes. Has a good record and skillset there.

Most ATGs/greats seem to retire around the age of 37/38/39. ABD is the only one in recent times that retired very early.
