Alternatives to replacing Kallis

Kallis is aging and can't be replaced as one of the best ever, but SA seems dry of talent to even remotely replace him. I so miss the era of MacMillan, Cronje, Klusener, Pollock!

Kallis' replacement is difficult as a batsman, but I see a two fold solution for the time being for home and away by alternating the spinner in current SA team with a Bowling all rounder like Parnell for home games as SA is simply never going to have spin friendly wickets. This is due to chronic problem that stems from wickets at school level that contain nothing but grass in even the most arid and driest regions of SA. I am no slector, but even though Dean Elgar had a terrible debut, he remains worthy of a spot to fill Kallis' role otherwise Rossouw, who together with Dumminy can hold up the ends in test format. I think SA for now have a single option in replaciing Kallis with Rossouw or Elgar and alternating bowling attacks with bowlers that can bat in that spinner position seeing as SA will never have full need for spinner at home, but can alternate as follows (post Kallis):

HOME
==============
Petersen
Smith
Amla
Elgar/Rosouw
De Villiers
Dumminy
Faf
Philander
Parnell
Morkell
Steyn

AWAY (sub continent)
==============
Petersen
Smith
Amla
Elgar/Rosouw
De Villiers
Dumminy
Faf
Philander
Morkell
Steyn
Tahir

Fun being an armchair selector SA have an attack that can take 20 wickets at home and a substitute or two wvwn with an injury. Therefore in a Kallis retirement given current team role of Kallis he needs to be replaced possibly by a bowling allrounder in Parnell who together with Philander can surely average 56+ with bat between them.

It is likely by the time Kallis retires (within 2-3 years) that SA will get a proper w/k in unless the are happy with AB and De Kock looks the part though Kieswetter must feel like he made a wrong decision going to England lol.Should this materialize (based on this last test win (SA in Aus) I am sure AB has proved to play for the team now giving evidence of his willingness to shuffle around if needed, but SA have already have an overflow of batsman (with test experience) that are more than worthy in the middle order.

I'd replace him with a specialist bat, have Duminey as the front line spinner, and go with four seamers.

Would tend to agree with this

I'd use Chris Morris as the fourth seamer. He's a genuine allrounder and is very pacey, with the right attitude for the longer format.

Petersen
Smith
Amla
Rossouw/DeKock/Elgar
De Villiers
JP
Faf
Morris
Philander
Morkel
Steyn

That is a pretty menacing side. Crazy strong batting line up, and intimidating bowling

Haven't seen Morris or De Kock, we don't get any cricket here in Norway :( off to YouTube...

Dunno if you'd find any footage. Morris is a very similar bowler to Morkel I'd say. Pacey, aggressive, and tall so hits the pitch from an awkward angle. Has an excellent attitude for bowling in tests. Can be a bit wayward though

De Kock is considered by most to be the best young batting talent in SA. Early days, but he looks kinda gun. Lefty, would compare him in style to Darren Bravo from WI.

Missing a "like" button here.

There's plenty of ways to watch De Kock on the internet?

I'd just replace him with a specialist bat as well tbh how does this Morris fellow do in FC anyway?

Stat's look ok but the high batting SR rate and few innings make me think that he's not batting so high up, could be moved up if he's got the technique but I must confess I've seen nowt of the lad on account that I didn't watch that T20 lark earlier in the year.

Yep, bowling allrounder. Watched a fair bit of him, and even though it was 20/20 he just looked like a fella who should be bowling in tests, if you know what I mean

  • Withdraw from Test cricket when he retires
  • Clone him
  • Keep picking him long after his death
  • Play with ten men
  • Play with six men
  • Lobby for all future Tests to be simulated

I definitely think replacing him is the best option tbh.

You missed out "ensure opposition player has unfortunate accident after the toss"

You compromise and find one good batsman and one good bowler and forget about replacing him with an all rounder approaching his sort of quality. Live how the rest of the cricketing world does.

Replacing Kallis is impossible and I think the selectors are wise enough to realise this. I would replace him with a specialist bat who can average 50 in tests.

my team would look something like:

Smith
Peterson
Amla
Elgar / Russouw
AB ( keeper)
Duminy
Faf
Robbie P
Philander
Steyn
Morkel

3 quicks is enough, plus spin from Duminy and Robbie.

Batting line up is strong as Philander is "almost" an allrounder.

The key is AB keeping wickets as he opens a spot in the lineup.

Well, i would wheel a picture of a man watching paint dry out to bat. But then again, that might be too much for test cricket, the picture might wake people up at the ground, might have to save it for a T20 match. The painting also has to be lifeless, with little or no intelligence, have the appropriate hair hat, show a complete lack of match awareness, be able to send down pies at will, and talk like a guinea pig.
