Kallis is aging and can't be replaced as one of the best ever, but SA seems dry of talent to even remotely replace him. I so miss the era of MacMillan, Cronje, Klusener, Pollock!
Kallis' replacement is difficult as a batsman, but I see a two fold solution for the time being for home and away by alternating the spinner in current SA team with a Bowling all rounder like Parnell for home games as SA is simply never going to have spin friendly wickets. This is due to chronic problem that stems from wickets at school level that contain nothing but grass in even the most arid and driest regions of SA. I am no slector, but even though Dean Elgar had a terrible debut, he remains worthy of a spot to fill Kallis' role otherwise Rossouw, who together with Dumminy can hold up the ends in test format. I think SA for now have a single option in replaciing Kallis with Rossouw or Elgar and alternating bowling attacks with bowlers that can bat in that spinner position seeing as SA will never have full need for spinner at home, but can alternate as follows (post Kallis):
HOME
==============
Petersen
Smith
Amla
Elgar/Rosouw
De Villiers
Dumminy
Faf
Philander
Parnell
Morkell
Steyn
AWAY (sub continent)

Fun being an armchair selector SA have an attack that can take 20 wickets at home and a substitute or two wvwn with an injury. Therefore in a Kallis retirement given current team role of Kallis he needs to be replaced possibly by a bowling allrounder in Parnell who together with Philander can surely average 56+ with bat between them.
It is likely by the time Kallis retires (within 2-3 years) that SA will get a proper w/k in unless the are happy with AB and De Kock looks the part though Kieswetter must feel like he made a wrong decision going to England lol.Should this materialize (based on this last test win (SA in Aus) I am sure AB has proved to play for the team now giving evidence of his willingness to shuffle around if needed, but SA have already have an overflow of batsman (with test experience) that are more than worthy in the middle order.
