All-Time South Africa XIs - A re-run

Should RTD be eligible??

I thought that this XI was for players unable to play for SA due to the apartheid ban, or due to apartheid in Roro's case.

Imo, RTD although a fine player, is a post readmission Saffa who did superbly playing in English county cricket and for an associate side. By that logic we could pick someone like David Wiese.

I mean, David Wiese is definitely eligible. As is Nic Pothas actually. Or Andrew Puttick and Dale Benkenstein. The focus is definitely on the apartheid ban, but players born in South Africa/turned South African citizens; to never have played Test cricket is the criteria. Sorry, if I didn't clarified enough.

Thanks folks, to everyone who voted and followed the thread. I think this 7 South African Test teams and the 1 non-Test playing team turned out pretty well for the most part. Next team is India. I think all of us are a little burnt out now. So, will start in 3-4 days.

Hard to say. The specialist bats are very weak (other than Roro, who is kinda impossible to judge). But that's serious depth in batting and bowling, and some really good bowlers. Might be stronger than the B team. Or not.

B Team is a stretch imo. As you said, the batting just isn't there. Except Roro (whom we can't completely judge) and McEwan (arguable), the B team batting is leagues above. The bowling of No Test XI is better, but doubt the distance is huge really.

There's some serious bat deep in the no test, although that applies to the B team too.

I think the no test is a fair distance ahead on bowling. Rice is ridiculously good by 5th bowler standards, and ten Doescharte is a freebee. I regard the spinners as a bit of a wash, being hard to estimate. Not so confident about Le Roux and Hanley, but Morkel and Philander weren't that good. And VD Bijl is a huge factor. He's way ahead of Pollock.

I don't think so. I think Philander was an excellent bowler, though not as adaptive in for different conditions. Definitely ahead of Hanley, probably Le Roux too. Agreed that Bijl is quite a big advantage, arguably being as good as an ATG.

Fair, but he's not at ATG level for me. They might end up a bit better, or a bit worse. I would take the no tests as a pair above Philader and Morkel, but not a lot in it.

VD Bijl is the one guy I'm sure would have ended up an ATG, and likely a high level one. He's RSAs best domestic bowler ever by a ridiculous margin, and his MO is a cheat code for test success.

Van der Bijl and Le Roux would have taken 100s of test wickets between them , Rice would have had world class all round stats. McEwan and McKenzie would have scored many 100s, playing along side Cook, Richards, Kirsten etc, they would have been a formidable team, the rebel tours and world series cricket gave us a glimpse what might have been,
