I disliked the idea of picking a thrower ahead of bowlers of similar (maybe) quality like Underwood, Briggs and Peel and Verity. England's been chock full of good finger spinners, especially before covered wickets. I'm disappointed that people here are too blinkered by 'three pace bowlers + one spinner' to pick a two spinner attack. E with Bailey as third pacer was a great chance but Bowes was picked rather than Briggs.Tony Lock doesn't even make an England F XI? Really surprised by that. Have the legitimacy of his quicker deliveries played a part?
What's so great about Tony Lock? He absolutely decimated New Zealand who were the minnows of his time and his overall average against all the other teams was 32. When you consider he played on uncovered wickets, with the support of a great bowling attack, and in a relatively low scoring era in which his spin bowling colleagues averaged 21 (Laker), 20 (Wardle) and 17 (Appleyard), it is a pretty mediocre record. Considering the above factors, I struggle to understand why he should be rated as noticeably superior to the likes of Steel, Blythe, Freeman, White, Allen, Titmus, Edmonds, Tufnell and Panesar, none of whom have yet been selected.Tony Lock doesn't even make an England F XI?
