Well, Graveney and Jardine average 31 against Australia. Mead and Duleepsinghji have a much better average but played just 17 and 12 tests respectively so it's hard to pick them imo.To those of you voting for Patsy Hendren: He was clearly a great first class player and on face value his Test record looks very impressive. However, if we look a little deeper we can see he battered the minnows of his time (including 693 runs @ 115.50 on the 1929/30 tour of the West Indies) and averaged less than 40 against the one great team of his time, Australia. England have had a number of more consistent batsmen with more complete records, even though their overall averages may be lower.
Yes but Australia were arguably not the strongest opponents for much of Graveney's career and virtually no one has voted for Jardine.Well, Graveney and Jardine average 31 against Australia. Thorpe is a good pick, agreed.
England don’t seem to have a long list of quality No 3s for some reason. Graveney averaged a tad under 50 at No.3, had a good record against Hall and Griffith and was all class - so he’ll do.Well, Graveney and Jardine average 31 against Australia. Yeah it appears he only opened three times. And plenty of England players of that generation had a few innings opening. Doesn't really make sense.Jackson was a middle order player, no? Why so much opening love?
