Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

Johan

WG Grace took a century and 5’fer in the same first class match 37 times. Only 5 other players have managed it 10+ times.

Frank Woolley - 16
Young Jack Hearne - 14
George Giffen - 11
Garry Sobers - 11
Advantages of playing longer than most of this forum has lived.

Barnes as we know, was an exceptional bowler. He didn’t play any first class cricket after the war until 1927 (though of course he played in league cricket) when he was 54. Between then and 1930 at the age of 58 he played 11 matches. Here’s his bowling stats for those 11 matches.

11 matches 60 wickets @ 16.68 SR 49.27 5 5’fers 2 10’fers

Couldn’t strike as fast as he used to pre-war.

Adding onto with Barnes...

when South Africa toured England in 1929, on 12 June, Barnes faced South Africa as a 56-year-old man.

Barnes got 9 wickets for just 60 runs, bowling at the average of 6.66, striking almost every 26th ball (taking 6 ball overs). Comparatively, some of the top English bowlers of the time such as Tate and Larwood did not even come close, Tate took 10 wickets in 3 games, averaging 33 and striking almost every 100 balls. While Larwood, took 8 wickets in 3 games at an average of 23, striking almost every 77th ball.

The same phenomenon a year earlier, when West Indies played their first tour in Cricket in general, they faced a 55-year-old SF Barnes.

Barnes took 12 wickets for just 118 runs, averaging 9.85, striking every 24th ball, all in one game. Tate and Larwood, once again, could not compete with Barnes, Tate managed to take 13 wickets in 3 games at an average of 19, while striking every 58th ball. While Larwood managed to take 6 wickets at an average of 19, while striking every 50th ball. The Windies team were also in unanimous agreement that Barnes was the best they had faced all season, some like Constantine going ahead and saying he was the best they ever saw.

Given his herculean feats in county cricket, I'm surprised George Hirst isn't on the list.

Unless it was changed especially for this match, it would have been 6-ball overs (the only 8-ball over season in England was 1939).

Grace played for 11 years longer than Woolley; on the other hand, Woolley played over 100 more matches.

Frank Tarrant (12) is the 5th other player. Hirst and Rhodes apparently managed the feat 8 times each (or 9 times for Hirst if you count his "2 centuries, 2 5'fers" match as double).
Thought I might’ve forgotten to write one with that manual counting. Which match is that for Hirst? I was searching for one who’d scored tons in each innings and a 5’fer, but the list I looked at only showed single centuries for each, whilst showing multiple 5’fers in matches.

I wonder how much it has occurred in history (the twin hundreds plus a single 5’fer) surely much less than a hundred plus 2 5’fers.

I wonder if that 2 hundreds and 2 5’fers is a unique feat.
Yeah it's unique in FC cricket. Two other players have made two hundreds and taken ten wickets in a FC match (though not with two 5-fers) - Bernard Bosanquet, known as the inventor of the googly, in 1905, and Franklyn Stephenson in 1988.

Another stat that surprised me was that Kapil had only done the 100/5’fer once.
Speaking of which, Mehidy is close to doing this currently, just needs two more wickets. Will become the 27th man to do so at test level and only the 39th instance of this happening in test history.
