Hmm. idk about that. You wouldn’t expect him to be playing county and performing as well as he did there if that was the case. Just my personal thoughts.
playing county has a lot less stress than playing Test, less exposure, less media preassure and you don't have to go overseas for half the year. If you're trying to escape stress while also wanting to keep your skills honed for a return, that's probably the best way.

Look I’m as big a fan of Boycott as anyone but I don’t think thats an excuse for him. And in those days, media pressure was very big in county cricket.

I don't know, it makes sense to me, many Cricketers do play in FC even when their appetite for Test is finished and they want to take it easy. But regardless, I don't think there's a definitive answer here, but rather a mixture of many factors that may have led to him dropping for 3 years
