A-League Thread

Yeah that was a brilliant match between Melbourne and Sydney, went to the game too and i have to agree with Cloete that the standard of the matches made the NSL look so bad. Archie Tompson was brilliant all game and really could have got a hat trick if a had his scoring boats on. Dwight had a good game and scored a good goal, but seem to be out of position for most of the first half, setting behind the two strikers. Got a lot more into the game when he went out wide, as did Saso. Hope we continue with that formation for the next game.

Pretty close games overall, two 1-0s, 1-1 draw and a 2-0. Looks like its going to be a pretty close comp, well until SFC get their formation and structure right, and then their class will be too much for the other sides to handle.

Seems to be some interest floating around Australia football, so i thought i might try and re-active this thread. We are just over half way through the season and its as close as you can get with only 8 points sperating 1st to 7th:

Sydney FC - 23 pts :D
Adelaide Utd - 23 pts
Perth Glory - 20 pts
Newcastle Jets - 18 pts
Melborune Victory - 16 pts
Queensland Roar - 16 pts
Central Coast - 15 pts
NZ Knights - 3 pts

In a change the general run of results there was only one away win this weekend:
SFC 1 - QLD 0
CCM 1 - AU 2
MV 0 - NUJ 0
PG 3 - NZK 0

Also Japanese superstar Kuzu made his debut for Sydney FC comming on in the 76th minute in our 1-0 win.

In Japan he apparently is.

Then again you probably give much thought of the J-League as somebody would of walking backwards across the Sahara. Then again most people I know seem to.

It's Kazu if I am not mistaken. Apparently he has made football one of the most popular sports in Japan, whereas it could hardly compete before against baseball or sumo wrestling or whatever. He was fairly useless for Sydney yesterday though, coming on late as a sub and not doin much

After the qualifer there is the World Club Championships, where Sydney FC will take part, so i think that might keep the interest levels up for a while. Then after that only us die hard football support will take much interest. But you never know after the rugby league and union internationals are over they might be more attention placed on it. But most likely the mainstream media will start focusing on the lead up to winter wanabe football codes.

I don't know about other centres, but the press for the Victory has been fantastic down here, giving double spreads and all that jazz. Would do far better than the domestic cricket in terms of the amount of space it takes up in the papers.

I don't think Kazu will do much for on the field, but he might help the club get some current Japanese internationals to come to the club and other A-League sides. It would be good if Sydney FC and the other clubs can get some current internationals to come over who are still at peak of their careers, like Archie Thompson.

Same thing is happening down here in Sydney and apparently in Brisbane, Adelaidle and Perth also. The press have been a lot better then when the old NSL was around, but the rugby codes still have the main attention, when it comes to the media. But realistically thats unlikely to change until, Australia plays regular internationals and the A-League sides take part in the Asian Champions League.

Which is still more than the interest in AFL outside of Australia...

I think the likes of Nakata did that.
Kazu was around before Nakata, but they did play for Japan together for a long while.

Did any of you guys see Total Football last week? Apparently an Asian Champions League isn't spot for 2006 isn't looking good, as logistically it would throw off the competition structure. Hence they'd need to go from 28 to 32 meaning they'd need to find more teams even though alot of it has already been sorted. From 2007 onwards though our spot is 100% assured.

So in other words he's ancient then - sums up the A League to a tee if him and Dwight Yorke are the best you can attract.

Wow yeah... what a **** competition. Particularly considering it's the first whole seaosn, poor effort that. 8-)

Kazu isn't actually going to play much for Sydney anyway. He's on loan for 4 A-League matches as a substitute but he'll help out alot with marketing and stuff particularly in japan with the world club champs being hosted there.

Surely with the hype the first season is going to be the best chance to attract any names though...
