How embaressing. He's had a great year, but I just don't think he's all that special of a player. And who really cares what the umpires think anyway? Shane Woewodin won a Brownlow aswell, enough said. Cousins is a great guy though, probably the nicest i've met.

Great guy?

Ha. Scumbag, same with Gardiner. Both of them are bad for football.

Speaking of which, Barry Hall is free to play.
Bloody great news.

But yeh Cousins. He's easily the most tolerant player of the Eagles with the ummmm "different people", and has been polite and chatty whenever I've sen him. Embley is another I like.

And what's wrong with Woewodin?

Well, the brownlow has become a midfielder's medal, but let's see if Cousins gets the AFLPA MVP award. That's the award that TRULY identifies the best player of the year, because the AFL players know more than the umpires. I mean some votes were just crap. How Hodge didn't get any votes, let alone 3 votes in round 20 is unbelievable.

The guy is a 5 time All-Australian, and something like 3 time best and fairest. I don't know how you couldn't rate him.

And anyone ragging on Cousins for non-footy issues must not rate Gary Ablett very highly too I guess?

There should be a special panel for the Brownlow, like there is for AA selection. The players don't get time to see all the guys, and can only judge on how players have played against them, and the little they see out of that.

The panel isn't too bad an idea, but I disagree with your thoughts about players. Can you imagine how many times matches, or at least crucial parts of matches are shown to the players heading into matches? They'll definitely know who the best players of the year have been, and backman and forwards are more likely to be a show. Plus, don't the players vote for the best player from their club for the nominations in the first place?

I mean Carey never won a brownlow, but he has two MVP awards to his name. He was one of the most dominant players during the 90s. Hell Woewoedin may have won the brownlow in 2000, but Kouta was definitely the best player before his season ending injury that year, and won the MVP award. I find it a much more accurate assessment of the best player.

Isn't there a coach's award too?

Yeah, there were some real shockers this year. Especially the way key position backmen (rather than rebounding ones) are COMPLETELY ignored.

Matthew Scarlett in round 12 had 14 marks and 30 touches and completely dominated the game and got 2 votes, while Bassett who had a running role but less impact on the game by far got the 3. Ben Rutten in round 8 had 20 touches and 8 marks and completely destroyed Jonathan Brown (who was incidentally in the form of his life), and didn't get a single vote. In fact, he didn't get a single vote for the whole year, despite being outplayed only twice and being an All-Australian.

And as far as midfielders who got robbed go... well Edwards in round 22 had 30 touches and got overlooked, while McLeod had a relatively minor impact on the game aside from one short period where he was in the midfield and got 3.

I so badly wanted Edwards to win once Hodge couldn't. The man has been underrated for so long. However in regards to McLeod, he's one of those players that just poll votes every year. Ricciuto is another, as is Hird. Its just so obvious when they have an impact in a game, even if its only for a quarter, that it sticks out in the umpires' minds.

That being said, I didn't even consider Edwards for the brownlow despite thinking this was perhaps his best season ever, so I'm glad he picked up a lot of votes and almost won the damn thing. Wouldn't it have been odd if Edwards and/or Kerr had won the brownlow without making All-Australian? Has that happened before?

And in regards to key-backmen not getting votes, its BS! But how hilarious was it when Scarlett got 1 vote for a game (can't for the life of me remember which one) and he was sleeping and his gf had to bump him when the camera was on him. That was great! I'm sure all key backmen were thinking that.

Michael Brauns injury means he cant play in the GF.

That is really sad... hes played every game since the middle of 2003, what a game to miss.
