Victoria vs The Rest could work I think. Vic vs SA just seems silly now though, given the expansion of the sport in other states.
No it wouldn't because 'the rest' would have no state pride. Back then putting on an SA jumper used to mean something just like the Big V did.

The Allies never showed as much enthusiasm as Vic, SA and WA.

I can't stand Essendon whining about the fine for the arm bands. They were clearly told not to wear them, they did it anyways and now wonder why the AFL is ****ed off.

And its not like the AFL are keeping the money, its going back into cancer research, the same cause Essendon were trying to promote.

I quite like the way the AFL is run under Demitriou.

You serious?

What could possibly be wrong with wearing a yellow armband for cancer?

The AFL are just being petty and shouldn't have disallowed it in the first place.

It is not the point that it is a nobel cause, Essendon can't just do whatever they want and think they are above rules. Keeping to a strict dress code is one of the fundamental reasons why this is a professional sport and not an amatuer game.

And anyways, I think the reason Essendon deliberatly went against the league is becuase they were forced to make an alternate jumper and since they lost that battle, they tried to take the AFL on here. And they lost.

What a load of crap. Seriously, it's the stupidest decision the AFL has made that I can remember. Possibly since allowing Fremantle into the AFL.

I think the AFL should have just issued a "token fine" of a couple of grand.

The biggest issue I have is with the magnitude of the fine.

Can't say that I agree with you there;

Essendon made a request to the AFL in the week preceeding the game to wear the yellow armbands, this request was knocked back by the AFL, whether they were right or wrong that was the decision made.

A few weeks earlier, Melbourne made a request to the AFL to wear pink armbands in the match against Fremantle to promote breast cancer awareness. Is this a lesser cause than Essendon wanting to wear yellow armbands?

The difference was that Melbourne were able to cope with that decision, and instead continued on with their other methods of promoting breast cancer awareness. Essendon however, completely ignored the AFL's ruling, and wore armbands anyway, but are now crying foul because they've been fined. There were other ways that Essendon could of trumpeted their cause, but they chose to breach AFL rules.

This is no different to Collingwood's refusal to design an alternate strip. One of the two traditionally powerful clubs completely ignoring a decision by the ruling body.

Really, the AFL should have fined them more.

Essendon were in the wrong by disobeying the AFL, but I'm confused as to why the AFL didn't allow them to wear the armbands...

Didn't they think it was a publicity stunt by which Essendon would recieve media attention, public support and so on? I gather that's the reason they refused it - because if they allowed it, they'd have to allow every team to wear armbands for some cause. What happens if, the week after Essendon wear their cancer armbands, Adelaide want to wear armbands promoting Toyota, or a membership drive? It'd be hard to refuse that without making a value judgement about what is a worthy cause to promote and what isn't.

Its basically if they allowed one, they'd have to allow all.

I wonder if the AFL will put in another 20k to go to the cancer foundation like Essendon have requested.

The AFL as the ruling body has the ability to use their discretion - I think setting a precedent is hardly an issue and slapping the club with a fine for supporting a worthy cause and one of their own players is pretty grubby.

Seriously, who is going to expect Well Essendon got to do it to stand up as a viable means of blackmailing the AFL into what they want if they don't punish Essendon? They can just say "Not of the same magnitude, sorry... get stuffed."

And above all, it's sad to think that the AFL is going to make an armband the big issue when it really shouldn't be.

Well, I'd expect clubs to do it. Not in those exact terms of course, but if they allowed Essendon to do it, what would Melbourne say about their breast cancer one being rejected? And what happens if a club wants to wear some sort of advertising for a sponsor that could be argued to have a similar public interest angle, like say Quit or anti-drink driving campaigns or something? I think the fine was rather harsh, but it's pretty clear why the AFL had to reject the request, and they also had to issue a fine when Essendon directly disobeyed instructions not to wear the armbands.

The best thing for the AFL to do would be to donate the matching funds to the cancer council or whatever, and then put the issue behind them.

They are alreay donating the original 20000 to the council, I don't see why they should donate another 20000. This is all about Essendons huge ego. They don't want to look like losers here so at least they can say they got the AFL to match the fine they payed. From the start this has been all about their ego and arrogance like 'who is the AFL to stop us', clearly they are still ****ed off about the alternate jumpers.

Its Essendon and Collingwood (and formerly Carlton) who both think they are above all the rules and have some sort of special right above all other clubs.

Had $50 on the Roos, mainly because I was sure they'd win but also because my bro supports them and hence I have a soft spot for them, and seeing them lose so often was making me kind of sad (replaced by my annoyance for Richmond's loss to Hawthorn though :().

Mid-way through the third quarter and at the start of the fourth, particularly with someone liek Deluca owning the Roos, it really wasn't looking good. But Harvey just kept running, and Grant and Wells provided that spark. Corey Jones and Harding were good at the end too.

Was an exciting match, mainly thanks to Shannon Grant and Fevola who were awesome.

Noo! C'mon Carlton, we played so well! Argh. Fevola... absolute freak. Encouraging signs, but our defence... :(
I am not happy. If we can't beat the kangas, who can we beat?

Oh well. More draft picks for us.
