This actually isn’t true at all tbh.

UC, loved your missive. If you ever get a chance to watch an AFL game live, do it. Fastest of all football codes by a million miles, and the kicking skills and athleticism is next level.
Yeah if I’m ever in Australia I definitely will. Great atmosphere and it seems like you miss a lot of what’s happening watching on tv.

It’s way better at the ground than on television where it looks like kick & hope

Incredible athletes and very strategic

Yeah haha you can repost if you like. I’d seen bits and pieces but never watched it properly before. I’ve come to really like watching sports where I have no idea what’s going on and trying to figure them out.

It’s a bit less like Gaelic football than I expected. I didn’t realise it was quite so much more violent. Plus Gaelic has moved towards shorter passes and blanket defences, AFL looks more similar to how it used to be played. But the skills required still seem very similar, the best Gaelic players are big, strong, incredibly fit, and use the same catching technique where you get up early and take it as high as possible. So it makes sense that players can make the switch.
the joy of watching Aussie rules live when you see a fella spot a team mate who’s like 80 metres away and put a kick right where the fella can run onto it at full tilt is so good. You don’t get to see it so much on tv because of the tight camera angles

You could probably count on one hand the number of clubs who don't have staff who were assistant coaches under Clarkson during that time.

True, but it's a bigger deal when it's the head coach I guess. Lions already stood down Fagan. Can't see North proceeding with Clarkson pending the AFL review. What a mess. Has to be dealt with though.

Actually, Fagan took voluntary leave of absence ... Jumped before being pushed?

An as yet un-named member of the Hawthorn coaching staff allegedly said, "Don't draft anyone darker than me,"

I thought I heard Hawthorn were more or less known for an unspoken pale recruitment policy until the early 2000s but I may be wrong on that, not something I'd heard directly. Others more familiar with the club's history are probably better placed to comment

Edit: just had a look - they recruited two indigenous players - in 57-58 and 64-65 respectively for a total of 18 games. They were the only two until Chance Bateman in 2000. FMD that's extraordinary

Clarkson and Fagan denying the claims and willing to cooperate with the investigation.

Wonder what legal advice they've gotten here?
