A.F.L. Thread II

It was surreal. I think at one point in the 4th Essendon had put up close to fifty points against one goal or something.

Fev kicked a goal in the first half today, got sent off in the third by a goal umpire for swearing, got on twitter to give him a bake, said he hopes the crowd abuse him, and then kicked nine goals after coming back on.
Fevola gets on Twitter during most of his games this year. First one he played against my mob he replied to a journo who was writing something about him on there 'enjoying the game mate?'.

you must be thinking about someone else
No I know who he is. He's the bloke who didn't do anything for three quarters then had a crack when the game was lost.

Look, he's a good player but the fact is if you play four games in a row in the afl every tv commentator on the game labels you "a star". There's no premium on quality in the coverage of the sport, and it's a shame.

Haha, yes the over playing of "star" does happen a bit. But it doesn't apply to Watson. Think of how good Kennedy has been so far this year for Sydney. Well that's been Watson for the last four years for Essendon, without the assistance of any good inside midfielders. Just look at what happened when he got injured last year to the Bombers' fortunes.

I'm not saying he isn't good, I'm saying he's been hyped up more than warrants. Happens everywhere and in all sports. Same with Kennedy. They're good Players but they talk about them like they're Judd or Ablett.

As for being your best last night for three quarters, it's like being the Swans best against St Kilda.

Another listless Suns display last night

It's not just their performances, but the lack of spirit

There's no spark there, no sense of team, like there is GWS for instance

It was premature to extend McKenna for another two years

Have to question their approach last year. GWS have been implementing defensive structures from the start, and there's no doubt it's paying off to a certain extent.

GC's attitude of "letting the boys play footy" just too laissez faire for my liking, over a whole year. Obviously to some extent a simplification, but I think we all saw with Knights at Essendon, you have to give your players an understanding of how to defend first.
Stick by this. Defence has to be instinctive, and they've wasted a year not making it so.

you would have thought after the whole Knights thing, clubs would be a bit more cautious before extending contracts from unproven teams. Melbourne learnt from it, they didn't sign Bailey up during the season, and thank god, because 186 happened. but GC didn't. i mean, i realise it's a bit absurd, but you should really ask yourself "will we keep this coach on if he loses a game by 186 points?" before extending the contract. Either the GC didn't ask that question, or they answered it incorrectly.

Another question before reappointing should be:

if McKenna was not the incumbent, but had a CV exactly as had when he was extended, wouuld he have got the extension?

No way. Sometimes I think clubs take the easy option and just extend the incumbent, rather than going through the turmoil of changing a coach (Voss another good example late last year).

Watson is probably going to win the Brownlow man.

He's at least top 5-7 midfielders in the comp.
