Players stealing votes off each other in the Brownlow is such a myth, it's a blatant fallacy.

Let's go through the Brownlow winners of recent times, taking out Judd last year.

Gary Abblett played in the best midfield in the competition.
Cooney had little competition in the midfield.
Bartel best midfield.
Goodes played in a Grand Final team.
Cousins best midfield.
Judd best midfield.
Skip the 3 way tie.
Black best midfield.
Akermanis best midfield

etc etc etc.

The fact is that you generally need to play in the one of the best midfield's in the league. Players around you will make you look better than you maybe already are.

In conclusion, I'm sick of people using the 'he'll steal votes off him so he won't win it' line.
Of course the fallacy you speak of is fundamentally wrong because rather than stealing votes off one another, the best players make each other look better and hence poll more votes.

I agree with all of that, but the idea of there only being a certain number of votes to go around per game is not a myth, that's a mathematical reality.

I'm not sure whether your post was even responding to me but what I said was Pendlebury would probably pick up some of what Swan is going to miss out on. If Swan being crap this year and missing a couple of games gives Pendlebury a chance to pick up an extra point in a couple of games, on top of whatever else he has done this year, that could take him from the 21 he got last year into the high twenties.
