Yeah, they did start paying those free kicks a bit more after the Staker-Hall incident, and after Leigh Brown's mix up between Jono Brown's back and a elbow-bag. While getting stuck into Thompson, they did make the point that the umpires were largely to blame as if they'd paid a free or two earlier in the game when Thompson bumped him (as they were doing in last year's finals) the inevitable blow up probably would have been nipped in the bud.
I don't think its a great sight to see a backman just scragging a forward like that all day, and there is an element of cowardice in it, as they do it in the knowledge that the forward isn't going to turn around and belt them (well, 99% of the time), because they'll get weeks, and because they'll be playing the ball more than the man given their role. I don't think Thompson would have done what he did if he felt there was any chance Hall could survive another striking charge, but Hall made that cross for his own back really, the guy's extremely lucky to still be playing AFL, so I agree, he shouldn't be made out to be St. Barry just yet.
I think the real problem is that they've taken away just about everything else a backman can do - ironically, you're probably now more likely to give away a free kick trying to contest the ball than you are scragging a guy 100 metres off the play!
