The way the final day works is that you have to bowl up until 15 overs, then the Test goes for either 15 overs or 1 hour (what comes later). And after 15 overs you can go off if there is no chance of a result.

5th day, hence minimum overs overrules time restrictions. So long as conditions are fit for play, you play on until you hit the point where you expect one hour left, and then you play out 15 overs or one hour, which ever comes later

Tbf, with Smith out of the line-up, Australia probably loses the last Test.

Still though, all it would've taken was a quick 50 by Warner to add some pressure. I get that Warner's hardly been in the greatest of form, but it was a realistic enough proposition to cause a delay to the declaration.
