ferguson is a lot better than milne but 2015 was better and it's not close. boult was on fire, so was southee and we had daniel vettori. corey anderson was always great for some jammy wickets in a way that cdg/neesh just aren't when the sun is out.
I just back Boult to come right sooner or later. Apart from that one game against England, Southee was pretty average in 2015, and Santner I think is just about Vettori's equal as a containing spinner (at least in his one-legged 2015 incarnation). I agree the 5th bowling option is weaker on balance, but if we get overcast conditions like today, CdG is more likely to take you wickets and keep it tight than Corey.

It's never pleasing when both Taylor and Latham fail in the same match, but it is pleasing when we get over the line chasing a moderate total anyway, scratchy or not.

Incidentally, McCullum's predictions/recommendations haven't been so flash have they? He picked Pakistan to make the semis and NZ to just miss out a few weeks back, and yesterday he was harping on at the start how he'd have dropped de Grandhomme for Sodhi. Pleased he wasn't the selector yesterday.

That was a proper all-round performance by the lord, 1-33 off 10 with ball, and 60 at better than a run a ball with the bat.

Also thought Neesham's 20-odd was valuable-ish, and it does show the value in having 2 all-rounders at 6 & 7.

Flem - you willing to re-consider your call for 5 specialist bowlers at the cost of a batting all-rounder after that?

I have no dramas with the bowling side of things for us ... it’s Munro/Guptill/Latham that worries me. Not much value or form from these three yet.

NZ have three hit and miss batsman in the top 7 in Munro, Neesham, and CDG,,that won't do against the elite sides sadly. Munro got to go sadly.

So what? We also have 4 glue batsmen in that top 7, who can all bat through the whole innings in Guptill, KW, Taylor & Latham. I'd say that's quite a good balance of bread and butter myself. Aside from England and India, which other top 7s are much different or for that matter, any better?

Gee, SA blew that. Feel sorry for them, for some reason.

Good win for us. Munro needs to go but, other than that, the rest are contributing.

Great finish, century and all that by King Kane; but CdG is my man of the match. Bowled his full quota very well, and then turned the game around with the bat.
Indeed.

Remember when Simon Doull spent the first part of the tournament banging on and on about how CdG should be dropped for Sodhi? For some inexplicable reason he hasn't mentioned that lately.

Looks like this match was genuinely gun. Time zones proving a slight annoyance here (as does my internet effectively dying lol)

im more confident than pre-tournament on that front, but im not convinced it won't come spectacularly unglued under sunny skies. cdg is brilliant in suitable conditions but we knew that before the wc and neesham is neesham.

He's so one dimensional. It annoyed me when he was criticizing Henry in the middle of an excellent bowling spell. Apparently building pressure with dot balls isn't aggressive enough and doesn't earn you the right to be one of the cool kids.

sneaking past sa and bangers is also a problem.
That's a positive in my book. Undefeated after five games and we still haven't performed anywhere near our true potential.

Great to see this world cup is back to throwing up great games. I love watching low totals be competitive to the end. Selfishly distraught sa lost. Now they are more likely to pull off the upset against Australia.

What I would remember is that it was 11 days between matches for the Kiwis, and apparently they only managed 2 outdoor practice sessions across that period due to the weather. So it was understandable that they were a little rusty in some aspects of their game.

Incredible to think that Kane is still only 28, and could well have another 10 years or so in the game. What a legend!

Another world cup, another thriller between NZ and SA *yawn*. Wake me when England thump another minnow 400 to 250.

Tbf half you guys have been hating on CDG in this format for a while. I get his output had been weak but it always seemed like he had this innings in him

Kind of a travesty he didn't get man of the match. Kane I guess held his nerve but taking 1-33 off 10 these days is super useful to a team to go with his knock. Bowlers can only get MOMs if they take 5-20 it seems

I actually like McCullum's commentary. He isn't always right but he generally has a good reason behind what he says. With the Henry thing he was implying that he wasn't doing enough to get a South African wicket and was bowling too wide. Allowing the South African's to preserve their wickets during (theoretically) the hardest time to bat. If Saffa were 30-0 after 10 and 175 - 1 after 30, it'd be a good point. But thankfully on the day, CDG and Ferguson kept the pressure up and managed to stop the Saffas from building any match winning partnerships.

Henry did a good job, but it's not the job he is there for and I get Baz's logic. Though even beyond my blind hatred of Henry I disagree with it.
