For Canterbury, yes, but not for CD who declared after 120 overs. (And by the same reasoning declaring 8 down is better.) It's completely broken how batting for a draw in a hopeless situation is barely rewarded – the anti-draw points system being the stronger motivation for such early declarations.

Not for CD. Bonus points are taken at end of innings or at 110 overs, and at 110 overs CD were 8-312. And 9th wicket gets the 4th bowling point, so perhaps some sense declaring 8 down to avoid giving away 4th bowling point, but not 9 down.
