2024–25 NZ domestic season

Howsie

Cricketer Of The Year
Credit where credit's due, it was excellent scouting by MI to find him.
I’d love to know who vouched for him. New Zealanders have always struggled to pick up IPL deals. Tim Seifert picked up one early doors but that was because McCullum pushed for him and he had some pull at the time.

I'd like to know this, too. 40k could well end up being a bargain. Hope he gets a crack.

It seemed that this year the IPL franchises - and particularly MI - paid well over the odds for their stars, to the extent that had not a lot left in the kitty to fill out their squads. Quite a lot of players were signed at the bargain basement price whereas those setting their price a bit higher were not. I just wonder how much was:
‘This bloke is also going for only 30 lakh.’
‘Ok, lets buy him.’
7 players in the MI 2025 squad were signed for 30 lakh.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
He really shouldn't.

I've had it with 33yo journeymen and NZ cricket, even though we have an illustrious assocation with them. Bowes just this generation's Shannan Stewart.

At least with Robinson there is a hope he may rise above that level. There is also the possibility he may not even get to that level, of course.
I don't disagree, but it's sometimes good to know if a Kane Williamson or Daryl Mitchell goes down with injury we can call on an experienced head to come in and replace them in ways which rookies cannot.

That said there's a time and place for those experienced guys to get a look in, and ideally they don't become a permanent fixture thanks to middling performances.

It was scoring a century in the Brisbane off-season club T20 competition back in August that got him noticed

So, the 'voucher' probably not a NZer. The usual outsized influence of the Australian journeyman path, tbh

Yep this, and also Mitch McClenaghan obviously has some ties to MI still too and supposedly let them know about him.

tbf I understand why people are suspicious about NZ power hitters, because of our infamous boundary sizes. Clearly they've got smart analysts who are looking further than the numbers, cos his sixes are absolute monsters anywhere in the world.

Stephenson said he had a good chat with Jacobs after the third T20. Apparently, he only put his name in 30 minutes before the deadline after McClenaghan (Aces bowling coach) encouraged him to do it.

I thought the one person who troubled Jacobs was Shipley. Bowled really well to him.

Seems like the Saxton Oval pitch isn't playing quite the same way today as it did in the international the other day - the Hinds are 51-6 chasing 115.

Is it jagging around or just bad batting?

edit: I note that they are using the same boundary as for the mens game - not sure if that's recent? Will certainly bring the scores down as it makes trash spin a lot more viable in women's cricket.

They've noticeably increased the boundaries this season which is nice IMO (simply because there's no such thing as a boundary too big). Normally they're still smaller than the men's boundaries but Saxton is a poor man's Pukekura.

I am in favour of this in the long term but I think atm it too heavily rewards boring part timer spin, as the counterplay is whacking them out of the ground which isn't ubiquitous in the women's game yet.

Wellington are unironically a bowler light here. By my count this is the third time a domestic team has fielded one too few bowlers this season, and indeed since the beginning of time. I know I go on about it but I am forced to express my jubilation at the fact that it's only Canterbury now who stubbornly protest this dawn of an exciting era, that lacks team balance malpractice.

I suppose in this instance it's because the variously hittable mediums of McPeake and Dudding got poked last game. In men's cricket it's really pacers who struggle with small grounds. In the Super Smash, at least.
