Rain. Damn, was looking forward to that. Annoyingly if it was a standard day game there would have probably been a decent amount if cricket played already

What's the deal with Conor McInerney opening for SA? He's 30, has 19 FC games averaging 19.91. This season he's played all 4 games for 135 runs @ 16.67. How does he keep getting picked?

Last season it was either kelvin smith who's the same age with the same numbers, or mcgurk opening with hunt from memory. Must be noene making runs in grade/second XI.

Don’t get why Harvey doesn’t get a crack. Did well in grade last year over in Victoria and has done ok in 50 over cricket.

they really should be targeting a Fanning/Street/MacDonald type.

Yeah pretty much exactly what Nintendo said. The cupboard really is that bare at grade level in batting depth, especially at the top of the order.

The top of the runs list at grade level tends to be dominated by 30 plus players who have had chances and haven't grabbed them and also attacking lower order hitters who will never be viable oppening options anyway.

Even for the few youngish top order players who do have a modicum of talent, none of them really have the output that screams "pick me" at grade level. Generally the occasional good innings that hints towards something more, then absolutely nothing else for a while

Ah, I just realised McGurk overlooked by SA yet again. Well done SA, saving Aussie cricket 😀
Playing kelly over mcgurk seems silly to me. I don't like mcgurk, but it's fairly clear who the more talented bat is. Not like kelly is setting the world alight in red ball cricket.

Harvey is not the worst idea honestly, not sure his technique would really stand up on some of the tougher pitches in Shield cricket, but he certainly has more upside to him if he does get in than McInerney.

But yeah probably targeting someone interstate is probably the best course of action, all three you mentioned fit the bill. McDonald almost came over here a while back (the season Henry Hunt first arrived iirc) but the deal fell through late

Nah I can't agree with this. Kelly isn't an immense amount older than JFM, has made a hell of a lot or runs for Sturt, has batted reasonably well in his couple of Shield games this season and has a far more mature mindset when it comes to building an innings

Admittedly him actually being a South Australian homegrown product helps as well

Opening is the death position, so I think you can excuse fringe guys from other states moving for it (especially when ultimately it doesn’t mean anything)

Bancroft really is having a season from hell with his 3rd golden duck (5 ducks total). Can see him dropped for the next Shield game as this can't be doing him any good mentally.

I see your point, guess it's just frustrating there isn't really options locally though

Also unrelated, but in case you were wondering it was said on comms yesterday that Scott had a knee problem and had to get a few stitches in, hence him missing the last Shield game. So as it turns out he wasn't just not picked

I see Spencer Johnson got 19 overs in. Figures aren't so hot but we know he's good. Since it was mentioned in the 1st test thread he could be useful to replace a resting Starc at some point in the test series. I have a lot more hope in Johnson troubling India than say Bartlett.

Have heard from a very reliable source that the selectors have already spoken to the latter

I personally prefer Johnson and Richardson for tests

Jewell dropped for Tasmania, Nivethan Radhakrishnan in for him up the top. Interesting call

EDIT: Weatherald goes first rock, quite the change from his big ton last round. Playing across the line, looked like he was expecting inward movement that wasn't there

I think everyone who's seriously watched him knows that Johnson has the goods. But he's barely been able to string two FC games in a row together and Tests are another step up again as far as physical intensity goes

Meanwhile Bartlett is on overs restriction in the Queensland match starting today
